In the morning I came down . All day I collected dry branches with sharp thorns . I piled them up round the tree , like a little house . At night I sat inside it like a mouse in its hole when it sees a cat . The snake came back and went round and round my little house , looking for a way in . But the branches held , and in the morning it went away hungry . I came out , weak and shaking , and walked down to the sea . Then , to my great joy , I saw a ship . I waved my turban , and the sailors sent a boat for me . Some days later the captain came to me with some bags . “ These goods belonged to a trader called Sinbad the Sailor , ” he said . “ We left him on an island by mistake , so he must be dead now . Will you sell them for me ? I will give the money to his family . ” I looked carefully at the captain , and now I saw who he was . He was the captain of my second voyage ! “ Captain , look at me ! ” I cried . “ I am that Sinbad ! I fell asleep on the island , and when I woke up , your ship was gone . ” At first he did not believe me . But soon he saw that it was really me , and he was very glad . “ Now my mind is at rest , ” he said . “ Take your goods , and the money that I made with them . ” So in the end I came back to Baghdad with more money than I could count . Hindbad got another hundred gold coins , and the next day Sinbad went on . V . The Strange Law of the Island I was rich and happy after my third voyage , but I still could not stay at home , so I went to sea again . One day a great storm broke our ship to pieces , and many of our men drowned . A few of us held on to pieces of wood , and the waves carried us to an island . In the morning some people from the island found us and took us to their houses . They gave us some green plants to eat . I saw that they did not eat these plants themselves , so I only pretended to eat . But my friends were very hungry , and they ate everything . Soon they lost their minds . Then the people brought big bowls of rice . My poor friends ate it all , but I ate only a little . Now I understood what our hosts wanted . They wanted to make us fat , because the people of this island ate men . My friends felt no fear , and they ate and ate . They soon became fat , and I never saw them again . But I was too afraid to eat , and I grew thinner every day . Because I was so thin , they let me walk about freely . One day , when only an old man was watching me , I ran away into the forest . After seven days I came to the sea and met some men who were picking pepper . They spoke Arabic , my own language , and I told them my story .
