A little light came in through a crack in the rock . I was in a large cave full of the bones of the dead . At first I cried and shouted . Why did I leave home ? Why did I always want more money ? But at last I became calmer . I took my bread and water and went to the far end of the cave , where the air was fresher . I lived there in the dark and ate very little , but at last my food was finished . Then the stone moved again above me . They were letting down another dead man , and his living wife came down after him . Each time this happened , I took the bread and water that came down with the living . To stay alive , I did things in that cave that I am still ashamed of . I will not tell you about them . Then one day I heard something breathing near me . A small animal ran away and pushed itself through a crack in the wall . I followed it and crawled along the crack for a long time . At last I saw light , and I came out on the shore of the sea ! I cannot tell you how happy I was . The mountains went straight down into the sea , and nobody from the city could come to this place . So I went back into the cave and collected the diamonds , rubies and other jewels that lay on the ground . I made them into bundles and waited on the beach for a ship . After two days a ship came , and the sailors took me on board . “ Our ship went down , ” I told them , “ and I came to the shore with these bundles . ” Luckily they believed me . So I came back to Baghdad with more riches than ever . Once more I shared my money with the poor , and I gave rich gifts to the mosques . All the guests said that they liked the fourth voyage best of all . Hindbad got another hundred gold coins , and the next day Sinbad began again . VI . The Old Man of the Sea Even after all these dangers , I could not live a quiet life . This time I built a ship of my own , and some traders sailed with me . After a long voyage we came to an island where nobody lived . There we found a roc’s egg . The young bird was almost ready to come out , and its beak was already through the shell . I told the traders to leave the egg alone , but they did not listen . They broke the shell with their axes and killed the young roc . Then they cooked it and ate it . I watched them in horror . Soon two huge shadows came over us . “ The parents are coming ! ” cried the captain . “ Quick ! Back to the ship ! ” We ran to the ship and put up the sails . When the rocs found their young one dead , they gave terrible cries . For a moment they disappeared . Then they came back and flew high over our ship . Each bird carried a huge rock in its claws .
