“ That was the Old Man of the Sea ! ” they said . “ You are very lucky . He has killed everyone else who carried him . No sailor goes far from his friends on this island . ” They took me on their ship to a large town . There one of the traders gave me a big bag and showed me some other men with bags like mine . “ Go with these men and do what they do , ” he said . “ But don’t lose them . If you get lost , your life will be in danger . ” We went into a forest of very tall trees with coconuts at the top . The trunks were thin and smooth , and nobody could climb them . Many monkeys were jumping from tree to tree . Then the men began to throw stones at the monkeys . At first I was surprised . But soon I understood . The monkeys became angry , and they pulled coconuts off the trees and threw them down at us ! Very soon our bags were full . For many days I did this work , and then I sailed away with my coconuts . I traded them for pepper . On another island I paid some divers to look for pearls , and they found many big , perfect ones . With all these treasures I came home to Baghdad . As before , I gave a tenth of my money to the poor . Hindbad got another hundred gold coins . The next day Sinbad told the story of his sixth voyage . VII . The River Under the Mountain You must wonder why I went to sea again after all my troubles . I am surprised myself . But it was my fate to travel . After a year I sailed again , this time from India . Storms blew us far off our course , and for many days nobody on the ship knew where we were . When the captain found out at last , he threw his turban on the floor and pulled his beard . “ We are in the most dangerous place on the whole sea ! ” he cried . “ The water is moving fast here , like a river , and it is carrying us to our death ! ” It was true . The water carried us towards a high mountain , and our ship broke to pieces on the rocks . We just had time to climb onto the shore . “ Now we can start digging our graves , ” said the captain . “ Nobody ever comes back from this place . ” The shore was covered with pieces of a thousand ships and the bones of their sailors . We could not climb the mountain , and no ship could save us there . There was one strange thing . A river came out of the mountain near us . But it did not run into the sea like other rivers . It ran into a dark cave under the rock . The walls of this cave were covered with diamonds and rubies . The captain divided our food equally between us all , and each man lived as long as his food lasted . I could live on very little . So I lived longer than the others , and I buried my friends one by one . At last I was alone , and I had almost no food left . I began to dig my own grave .
