In Baghdad I took the letter and the gifts to the Caliph at once . He asked me , “ Is the King of Serendib really as rich and powerful as he says ? ” I bowed and answered , “ Yes , my lord , he is . When he goes out , he sits on a throne on the back of an elephant . A man in front of him calls out , ‘ Here comes the great King of the Indies ! ’ And a man behind him answers , ‘ This king is great and powerful , but he must die , he must die , he must die ! ’ ” The Caliph was pleased . “ From his letter I thought that he was a wise man , ” he said . “ He is a good king for his people . ” Then he gave me rich presents and sent me home . Sinbad stopped , and Hindbad got his hundred gold coins . The next day all the guests came back to hear about the seventh and last voyage . VIII . A Letter for the King of Serendib After my sixth voyage I decided never to go to sea again . I was older now , and I wanted a quiet life . But one day an officer from the Caliph came to my house and took me to the palace . “ Sinbad , ” said the Caliph , “ I need you . The King of Serendib sent me his friendship . Now I want you to take a letter and some gifts to him from me . ” These words hit me like a thunderbolt . “ My lord , ” I said , “ I will do anything you command . But please remember all my suffering . I have promised myself that I will never leave Baghdad again . ” And I told him about some of my strangest voyages . The Caliph listened patiently . “ Strange things have happened to you , ” he said . “ But you only have to go to Serendib and give my message . Then you can come back and do what you like . You must go . It is a matter of my honour . ” I had no choice , so I sailed to Serendib . The king was very happy to see me again . I showed him the Caliph’s gifts : fine beds , rich robes , a stone cup , and a table that once belonged to King Solomon . The king was very glad to have the Caliph’s friendship . For a long time the king did not let me go . At last he said goodbye , and I got on a ship at once . But on the fifth day pirates attacked our ship . Pirates are robbers who attack ships at sea . They killed everyone who fought them . I did not fight , so they took me prisoner . Then they sailed to a faraway island and sold us all as slaves . A rich trader bought me . He gave me good food and clothes , and after a few days he called me . “ Can you shoot with a bow ? ” he asked .
