“ I often did it as a boy , ” I said . “ I think I will soon be good at it again . ” So he gave me a bow and arrows . We both got on his elephant and rode to a great forest far from the town . “ This forest is full of elephants , ” said my master . “ Hide in this big tree and shoot at every elephant that comes past . When you kill one , come and tell me . ” Then he went back to the town . I climbed high into the tree and waited . Soon after sunrise a big group of elephants came crashing through the forest . I shot many arrows , and at last one of the great animals fell dead . I ran to the town to tell my master , and he was very pleased with me . Then we went back to the forest together and buried the dead animal in a big hole . My master wanted to come back later and take its tusks . Tusks are the two long white teeth of an elephant . They are made of ivory , which is very valuable . IX . The Hill of Ivory For two months I hunted like this , and every day I killed an elephant . Sometimes I sat in one tree , and sometimes in another . Then one morning something strange happened . The elephants did not walk past my tree . They stopped and stood all round it . They made loud , angry noises , and their heavy feet shook the ground . They were all looking up at me ! I was so frightened that my arrows fell from my shaking hands . A moment later the biggest elephant put its trunk , its long nose , round my tree . With one great pull , it tore the tree out of the ground , and I fell down among the branches . “ Now I will die , ” I thought . But the elephant picked me up gently and put me on its back . I held on , more dead than alive . The elephant walked away into the thick forest , and all the others followed . After a long time it put me down on the ground , and all the elephants went away . I stood there as if in a dream . Then I looked around . I was on a big hill . It was covered with the bones and tusks of elephants . There were thousands of them , as far as I could see . “ This must be the place where elephants come to die , ” I said to myself . “ They want me to stop killing them . They know that I only want their tusks . And here there are more tusks than I could carry in my whole life ! ” I walked back to the town and did not see a single elephant on the way . How clever they were ! After a day and a night I came to my master’s house . “ Oh , poor Sinbad ! ” he cried . “ I found your tree on the ground and your arrows next to it . I thought that I would never see you again ! How did you escape ? ” I told him everything . The next day we went together to the Hill of Ivory , and he saw that my story was true . We put as many tusks on our elephant as it could carry . On our way back he said to me :
