I . The Troll’s Mirror Listen carefully , because this story begins with a troll . When we come to the end , we will know more than we know now . Once there was a wicked troll , one of the very worst . Some people said that he was the devil himself . One day the troll made a mirror , and it put him in a very good mood . It was a wicked mirror . Everything good and lovely looked small and poor in it . But everything bad and ugly looked even bigger and worse . The prettiest fields looked like boiled spinach , and the kindest people looked ugly and silly . When a good thought came into someone’s head , the mirror turned it into a bad one . The troll laughed and laughed . He thought that it was the best joke in the world . The troll had a school , and his pupils carried the mirror to every country . “ Now people can see what the world is really like ! ” they said . Then they wanted to fly up to the sky with it and laugh at the angels too . But the higher they flew , the more the mirror shook . At last it jumped out of their hands . It fell to the earth and broke into millions of pieces . Now the mirror did even more harm . Some pieces were smaller than a grain of sand , and the wind blew them all over the world . When a tiny piece flew into someone’s eye , it stayed there . From then on , that person saw only the bad side of everything . A few people got a piece in their heart . That was the worst thing of all , because their heart became as cold as ice . The troll laughed until his sides hurt . And little pieces of the glass were still flying through the air . Now you will hear what happened to some of them . II . Kay and Gerda In a big town there was no room for gardens , so most people had only a few flowers in pots . But two poor children there had a garden that was a little bigger than a flower pot . They were not brother and sister , but they loved each other just as much . Their families lived in two small rooms under the roofs of two houses . The roofs almost touched , and you could step from one window to the other . Outside each window there was a wooden box with vegetables and a little rose bush . The parents put the two boxes across the gap between the houses . The roses grew long branches around both windows , like a green gate of leaves and flowers . In summer the children sat on little stools under the roses and played there . In winter the windows were covered with ice . Then the children warmed copper coins on the stove and pressed them against the glass . This made a little round hole , and through each hole a friendly eye looked out . The boy was called Kay , and the girl was called Gerda . “ Look , the white bees are flying , ” said the old grandmother one day , when snow was falling .
