Just then little Gerda came in through the great gate . Cutting winds blew there , but she said her evening prayer , and the winds lay down to sleep . She walked into the great empty hall , and she saw Kay . She knew him at once . She ran to him and threw her arms around his neck . “ Kay ! Dear little Kay ! I have found you at last ! ” she cried . But he sat very still , stiff and cold . Then Gerda cried hot tears . They fell on his chest and went into his heart . They melted the ice and washed away the piece of glass in his heart . He looked at her , and she sang their song : “ The roses grow in the valley , and there we will meet the Christ Child . ” Then Kay began to cry too . He cried so much that the glass came out of his eye with his tears . Now he knew her . “ Gerda ! Dear little Gerda ! ” he said . “ Where have you been all this time ? And where have I been ? ” He looked around . “ How cold it is here ! How empty and big ! ” He held Gerda tightly , and she laughed and cried with joy . They were so happy that even the pieces of ice danced around them . When the pieces were tired , they lay down . And they made the word “ eternity ” , all by themselves . Now Kay was his own master . Gerda kissed his cheeks , and they became pink . She kissed his eyes , and they shone like hers . She kissed his hands and feet , and he was well and strong again . The Snow Queen could come home now when she wanted . Kay’s freedom was written there in shining letters of ice . X . Home Again Kay and Gerda took each other by the hand and walked out of the castle . They talked about Granny and about the roses on the roof . Wherever they walked , the winds were quiet and the sun came out . At the bush with the red berries , the reindeer was waiting for them . He brought a young female reindeer , and she gave the children her warm milk . The reindeer carried them first to the Finnmark woman , where they got warm . Then they went to the Lapland woman , who made new clothes for them and got her sledge ready . The two reindeer ran beside them to the edge of the country , where the first green leaves were coming out . There they all said goodbye . Soon the birds began to sing , and a fine horse came out of the forest . Gerda knew it , because it was one of the horses from the gold carriage . On it sat a young girl with a red cap and guns in her belt . It was the little robber girl ! She was tired of staying at home , and she wanted to see the world . “ You’re a fine one for running away ! ” she said to Kay . “ I’d like to know if you are worth it . Should anyone run to the end of the world for a boy like you ? ”
