“ Do the white bees have a queen too ? ” asked Kay . “ Yes , ” said Granny . “ She flies where the snow is thickest , and she is the biggest of them all . On winter nights she flies through the streets and looks in at the windows . Then the glass freezes into shapes like flowers . ” “ Can the Snow Queen come in here ? ” asked Gerda . “ Just let her come , ” said Kay . “ I’ll put her on the hot stove , and she’ll melt . ” That evening Kay climbed onto a chair and looked out through the little hole . One flake of snow landed on the flower box . It grew bigger and bigger , and at last it became a tall woman in a dress of tiny white stars . She was lovely , but she was made of shining ice . Yet she was alive . Her eyes shone like stars , but there was no peace in them . She nodded at the window and waved to him . Kay was frightened and jumped down from the chair . Then spring came , and the children sat in their little garden on the roof again . That summer the roses were lovelier than ever . Gerda learnt a song from church , and she sang it with Kay : “ The roses grow in the valley , and there we will meet the Christ Child . ” One day they were looking at a picture book . Just then the church clock began to strike twelve . “ Ow ! ” said Kay suddenly . “ Something hit me in the heart ! And now there’s something in my eye ! ” Gerda looked into his eye , but she could not see anything . “ I think it’s gone , ” he said . But it was not gone . It was a piece of glass from the troll’s mirror . A tiny piece was in his heart too , and soon his heart was going to be like a lump of ice . “ Why are you crying ? ” he asked Gerda . “ It makes you look ugly . Look , there’s a worm in that rose ! They are ugly roses . ” He kicked the box and pulled off two roses . “ Kay , what are you doing ? ” cried Gerda . But he only jumped in through his window and left her alone . After that , Kay changed . He said that picture books were for babies . When Granny told stories , he always said , “ But . . . ” He even put on her glasses and copied the way she talked . People laughed and said , “ What a clever boy ! ” But it was really the glass in his eye and in his heart . Because of it , he even laughed at little Gerda , though she loved him with all her heart . III . The White Sledge One winter day Kay caught some snow on his blue coat . He showed it to Gerda through a special glass that made things look bigger . Each flake looked like a lovely flower or a star . “ Look how clever that is , ” said Kay . “ It’s much more interesting than real flowers . The flakes are perfect , as long as they don’t melt . ” A little later he came out with his sledge . “ I’m going to the big square to play with the other boys ! ” he shouted to Gerda . And off he went .
