In the square , the bravest boys tied their sledges to the farmers ’ carts and rode along behind them . While they were playing , a big white sledge came into the square . In it sat someone in a white fur coat and a white fur hat . Kay quickly tied his little sledge to it , and when it left , he went with it . It went faster and faster , out through the town gates . The driver turned round and nodded to Kay in a friendly way . Each time Kay wanted to untie his sledge , the driver nodded again , so he stayed . Then the snow fell so thickly that Kay could not see his own hand . He tried to untie the rope , but his sledge stayed tied to the big one . They rushed on like the wind . Kay shouted , but nobody heard him . He wanted to say a prayer , but he could only remember his times tables . At last the big sledge stopped , and the driver stood up . The coat and hat fell off , and Kay saw that they were made of snow . The driver was a tall white lady . It was the Snow Queen . “ You are shaking with cold , ” she said . “ Come under my fur . ” She sat him next to her , and he felt as if he was sinking into deep snow . Then she kissed him on the forehead . Her kiss was colder than ice , and it went right into his heart . For a moment Kay felt as if he was going to die . But then he felt fine , and he did not notice the cold any more . “ My sledge ! Don’t forget my sledge ! ” he said . So a big white bird of snow carried it behind them . The Snow Queen kissed Kay once more , and then he forgot Gerda , Granny and everyone at home . “ Now you will get no more kisses , ” she said , “ or I will kiss you to death . ” Kay looked at her . He could not imagine a lovelier or cleverer face . Now she did not seem to be made of ice , and he was not afraid of her at all . He told her that he could do sums in his head , even with fractions . She only smiled , and he began to think that he did not know enough yet . Then she flew with him high up on a black cloud . They flew over forests and lakes , over land and sea . Below them wolves howled , and above them shone the big , clear moon . All through the long winter night Kay looked at it . By day he slept at the Snow Queen’s feet . IV . The Old Woman’s Garden Nobody knew where Kay was . The boys only saw him tie his sledge to a big white one . People said that he fell into the river and died , and Gerda cried for a long time . But when spring came , the sunshine said , “ We don’t believe that he is dead . ” The swallows said the same . At last Gerda did not believe it either .
