“ He is not dead , ” said the roses . “ We were down in the earth , where the dead are , and Kay was not there . ” Then Gerda asked the other flowers . But each flower only dreamed its own story . The snowdrop told her about children on a swing who were blowing soap bubbles . The hyacinths told her a sad story about three sisters who went into a dark forest . The buttercup told her about an old grandmother and the kiss of her granddaughter . “ My poor Granny ! ” said Gerda . “ She is waiting for me . But it’s no use asking the flowers . They only know their own songs . ” Even the narcissus only said , “ I can see myself ! I can see myself ! ” So Gerda ran to the end of the garden , pushed open the old gate and ran out into the wide world with bare feet . At last she sat down on a stone to rest . Then she saw that summer was over . It was late autumn . In the old woman’s garden it was always summer , so she did not notice . “ How much time I have lost ! ” said Gerda . She stood up and went on . But her feet were sore , and everything around her was cold and grey . The leaves fell from the trees , and cold drops of water fell like rain . Oh , how grey and hard the wide world was ! V . The Crow Soon there was snow on the ground , and Gerda had to rest again . A big crow came hopping towards her . “ Caw ! Caw ! Good day ! ” he said . He asked her why she was all alone in the wide world . Gerda told him her whole story and asked if he had seen Kay . “ Maybe ! Maybe ! ” said the crow . “ Do you really think so ? ” cried Gerda , and she hugged him so hard that she almost squeezed the life out of him . “ Careful , careful ! ” said the crow . “ I think it may be Kay . But he has forgotten you now , because of the princess . ” “ Does he live with a princess ? ” asked Gerda . “ Yes , listen , ” said the crow . “ In this kingdom there lives a very clever princess . She has read all the newspapers in the world , and she has forgotten them again . One day she decided to get married . But she wanted a husband who could talk well . She did not want a man who only stood there and looked fine , because that is so boring . My sweetheart is a tame crow in the palace , and she told me all this . “ So the princess put a notice in the newspapers . Every good - looking young man could come to the palace and talk to her . The one who spoke best was going to be her husband . Young men came in crowds . Outside in the street they all talked very well . But in the palace they saw the guards in silver and the servants in gold on the stairs . Then they lost all their words . In front of the princess they could only repeat her own last words . And she did not want to hear her own words again ! ”
