“ But Kay ! What about Kay ? ” asked Gerda . “ Wait ! We are coming to him . On the third day a young man arrived on foot . His eyes were shining like yours , and he had lovely long hair , but his clothes were poor . ” “ That was Kay ! ” cried Gerda happily , and she clapped her hands . “ He had a little bag on his back , ” said the crow . “ No , that was his sledge , ” said Gerda . “ Maybe , ” said the crow . “ I didn’t look very closely . But my tame crow told me the rest . His boots squeaked loudly , but he was not afraid at all . He went straight up to the princess . She was sitting on a pearl as big as a wheel . He said that he had not come to marry her . He only came to hear how clever she was . And he liked her , and she liked him . ” “ Yes , that was Kay ! ” said Gerda . “ He was so clever . He could do sums in his head ! Oh , will you take me to the palace ? ” “ That’s easy to say , ” said the crow . “ But a little girl like you will never get permission to go in . I’ll ask my tame crow . Wait for me here . ” VI . The Prince and the Princess It was dark when the crow came back . He brought a little bread from the kitchen . “ My tame crow knows a back stair to the bedroom , ” he said , “ and she knows where the key is . ” When the lights in the palace went out one by one , the crow led Gerda to a little back door . Oh , how her heart was beating with fear and hope ! She could almost see Kay smiling at her , just as he used to smile at home among the roses . At the top of the stairs a little lamp was burning , and the tame crow was waiting there . Gerda made a little bow , just as Granny had taught her . “ My dear has told me so many nice things about you , ” said the tame crow . “ Take the lamp and follow me . ” Something rushed past them like shadows on the wall . There were horses , hunters , and ladies and gentlemen . “ Those are only dreams , ” said the tame crow . “ They take the thoughts of the great people out hunting . That is good , because now they won’t wake up when we look at them . ” They walked through halls with silk on the walls . Each hall was grander than the last . At last they came to the bedroom . Two beds hung from a gold stem in the middle of the room , like two lilies . The princess lay in the white one . In the red one Gerda had to look for Kay . She saw a brown neck . “ It’s Kay ! ” she thought . She called his name and held up the lamp . He woke up and turned his head . But it was not Kay ! It was the prince . He was young and handsome , but he was only like Kay at the back of his neck . The princess looked out of her white bed and asked what was wrong . Gerda cried and told them her whole story .
