“ You poor little thing ! ” said the prince and the princess . They were not angry with the crows . They even gave them a reward : the crows became court crows , with all the food from the kitchen . The prince got out of his bed and let Gerda sleep in it . She put her hands together and thought , “ How good people and animals are to me ! ” That night she dreamed that Kay was sitting on a little sledge and nodding to her . In the morning they dressed her in silk and velvet . They asked her to stay at the palace . But she only asked for a little carriage , a horse and a pair of boots , so that she could look for Kay . She got boots and a warm muff for her hands . At the door stood a carriage of pure gold , with a driver and servants in gold crowns . The prince and princess helped her in and wished her good luck . The carriage was full of cakes and fruit . The crow from the forest went with her for the first few miles . Then he said goodbye , and that was the saddest goodbye of all . He sat in a tree and waved his black wings for as long as he could see the shining carriage . VII . The Little Robber Girl The carriage drove into a dark forest . It shone like a fire , and robbers saw it . “ It’s gold ! It’s gold ! ” they shouted . They ran out and took the horses . They struck down the driver and the servants , and they pulled Gerda out of the carriage . “ She’s fat and pretty , ” said the old robber woman , who had a long beard . “ She’s as good as a little lamb ! ” And she took out her long knife . “ Ow ! ” cried the robber woman . Her own little daughter was on her back , and the girl bit her mother’s ear . “ She will play with me , ” said the little robber girl . “ She will give me her muff and her pretty dress , and she will sleep in my bed . ” She was wild and spoilt , and she always got what she wanted . So she and Gerda rode deeper into the forest in the gold carriage . The robber girl was the same size as Gerda , but stronger . Her eyes were black and a little sad . She put her arm around Gerda . “ They won’t kill you while I’m not angry with you , ” she said . “ Are you a princess ? ” “ No , ” said Gerda , and she told her all about Kay . The robber girl looked at her very seriously . “ They won’t kill you , ” she said . “ Not even if I get angry with you . Then I’ll do it myself ! ” And she dried Gerda’s eyes and put her own hands into the soft , warm muff . The robbers lived in an old castle with broken walls . In the big hall a fire was burning on the stone floor , and soup was cooking in a big pot . After supper the robber girl took Gerda to her bed of straw in a corner . Above it sat more than a hundred pigeons .
