VIII . The Lapland Woman and the Finnmark Woman They stopped at a little house with a very low door . An old Lapland woman lived there . She was cooking fish over an oil lamp . The reindeer told her his own story first , because he thought it was more important . Then he told her Gerda’s story . Gerda was so cold that she could not speak . “ You poor things ! ” said the Lapland woman . “ You still have more than a hundred miles to go . The Snow Queen is in Finnmark now , in the far north of Norway . I have no paper , but I’ll write a few words on a dry fish . Take it to the Finnmark woman up there . She can tell you more than I can . ” When Gerda was warm and had something to eat , they went on . All night the blue northern lights flashed in the sky . At last they came to the Finnmark woman’s house . It had no door , so they knocked on the chimney and climbed in . Inside it was very hot . The Finnmark woman took off Gerda’s mittens and boots and put a piece of ice on the reindeer’s head . She read the words on the fish three times . Then she knew them by heart , so she put the fish into the soup pot . She never wasted good food . “ You are so clever , ” said the reindeer . “ I know that you can tie all the winds of the world in a piece of string . Can’t you give this little girl something to make her as strong as twelve men ? Then she can win against the Snow Queen . ” “ As strong as twelve men ? ” said the Finnmark woman . “ That won’t help much ! ” But Gerda looked at her with such sad eyes , full of tears , that the woman took the reindeer into a corner . There she spoke to him very quietly . “ Kay is really with the Snow Queen . He likes everything there , and he thinks it is the best place in the world . But that is because he has a piece of glass in his heart and a tiny piece in his eye . They must come out first . If they don’t , he will never be a real person again , and the Snow Queen will keep her power over him . ” “ But can’t you give Gerda something to help her ? ” asked the reindeer . “ I can’t give her more power than she already has . Don’t you see how great it is ? People and animals all want to help her . She has come so far on her bare feet . Her power is in her heart , because she is a sweet and good child . If she cannot reach Kay herself , we can’t help her . The Snow Queen’s garden begins two miles from here . Put the girl down by the big bush with red berries . Then hurry back ! ” She lifted Gerda onto the reindeer , and he ran off as fast as he could .
