“ Oh ! I haven’t got my boots or my mittens ! ” cried Gerda . But the reindeer did not dare to stop . At the bush with the red berries he put her down and kissed her . Big tears ran down his face . Then he ran back . There stood poor Gerda , without shoes and without mittens , in the icy cold . She ran on as fast as she could . Then a whole army of snowflakes came towards her along the ground . The closer they came , the bigger they grew . They were alive . They were the Snow Queen’s guards . Some looked like ugly animals with sharp spines . Others looked like snakes , or like little fat bears . Gerda said the Lord’s Prayer . It was so cold that her breath came out of her mouth like smoke . The smoke became little angels , and they grew bigger when they touched the ground . They had helmets , spears and shields . When Gerda finished her prayer , a whole army of angels stood around her . They broke the terrible snowflakes into a hundred pieces . Then they stroked Gerda’s hands and feet , and she felt the cold less . She walked on bravely towards the Snow Queen’s castle . IX . The Snow Queen’s Palace The walls of the castle were made of blowing snow , and the windows and doors were made of cutting winds . There were more than a hundred halls , and the biggest one went on for miles . The northern lights lit them all . They were so big , so empty and so icy cold ! There was never any fun there , not even a little dance for the polar bears . In the middle of the biggest hall there was a frozen lake . It was broken into a thousand pieces , and each piece was exactly like the others . The Snow Queen sat in the middle of this lake when she was at home . She called it the Mirror of Reason , and she said it was the best mirror in the world . Little Kay was blue with cold , but he did not notice it . The Snow Queen’s kisses had taken away his shivers , and his heart was almost a lump of ice . He was moving flat pieces of ice this way and that way . He wanted to make words with them . Kay thought that this game was very important , because of the glass in his eye . But he could never make the word that he wanted most . That word was “ eternity ” . It means time that never ends . “ If you can make that word , ” the Snow Queen told him , “ you will be your own master . Then I will give you the whole world and a new pair of skates . ” One day the Snow Queen said , “ Now I must fly to the warm countries . I want to look into the black pots . ” She meant the fire mountains , Etna and Vesuvius . “ I’ll make them a little white . It’s good for the lemons and the grapes . ” So she flew away , and Kay sat alone in the great hall . He looked at his pieces of ice and thought and thought . He sat so still that you might think he was frozen .
