A great wave broke the raft into pieces . Odysseus tied the veil round his body and began to swim . For two days and two nights he was in the sea . On the third day he saw land , but the coast was all sharp rocks . At last he found the mouth of a river . He prayed to the river god , and the water became calm . He swam in and crawled onto the land . He was so tired that he could hardly move . He threw the veil back into the sea . Then he went into the woods and found two olive bushes growing close together . Under them he made a bed of dry leaves . He lay down and covered himself with leaves , like a man who hides a spark of fire in the ashes . Athena closed his eyes , and he fell into a deep sleep . X . Nausicaa and the Phaeacians This land belonged to the Phaeacians , a people of great sailors . Their king was Alcinous , and his daughter was a beautiful young girl called Nausicaa . That night Athena came to Nausicaa in a dream . “ Nausicaa , you will soon be married , ” she said , “ but your clothes are all dirty . Ask your father for the wagon tomorrow morning and go to the river to wash them . ” In the morning Nausicaa drove the wagon to the river with her maids . They washed all the clothes and laid them on the stones to dry . Then they had a picnic and played a game with a ball . Nausicaa threw the ball to one of the maids , but it fell into the river . All the girls screamed , and the noise woke Odysseus . “ Where am I ? ” he thought . “ Are the people here wild , or are they kind to strangers ? ” He had no clothes , so he broke off a leafy branch to cover himself . Then he came out of the bushes . He was dirty and covered with salt from the sea . The maids saw him and ran away in all directions . But Athena made Nausicaa brave , and she stood and waited . Odysseus did not want to frighten her more . So he stayed where he was and spoke to her gently . “ Are you a goddess or a girl ? ” he said . “ I have never seen anyone so lovely . Yesterday I escaped from the sea after twenty days . I have lost everything . Please , lady , help me . Show me the town , and give me an old cloth to cover myself . May the gods give you a good husband and a happy home . ” “ Stranger , ” said Nausicaa , “ you seem like a good man . We will help you . ” She called her maids back . “ Why are you running away ? This poor traveller is not an enemy . ” The maids gave him clothes and olive oil , and he washed in the river . Then Athena made him look taller and stronger , with thick , curly hair . When he came back , Nausicaa looked at him in surprise . “ Listen , ” she said quietly to her maids . “ At first this man looked terrible , but now he looks like a god . I wish I could have a husband like him . ” They gave him food and drink , and he ate hungrily . Then Nausicaa explained the way to the town .
