I . Troy Is Over For ten long years the Greeks fought against the city of Troy . At last the war was over . Troy was burning , and the Greek kings were ready to sail home . One of these kings was Odysseus . The Romans later called him Ulysses , and some old English books use that name . Odysseus was not the strongest of the Greeks , but he was the cleverest . It was his idea to build a great wooden horse and hide soldiers inside it . The people of Troy pulled the horse into their city , and that was the end of Troy . Odysseus was the king of Ithaca , a small , rocky island in the west . His wife Penelope was waiting for him there . When he left for the war , their son Telemachus was only a baby . Now the boy was ten years old , and he did not know his father’s face . “ We are going home , ” Odysseus told his men . “ Soon you will see your wives and children again . ” He had twelve ships and many brave sailors , and they started rowing happily . But the gods had other plans . Many of the gods lived on Mount Olympus . Zeus was their king . His brother Poseidon was the god of the sea , and he could make storms and great waves . The goddess Athena was wise and clever , and she loved Odysseus . The Romans called her Minerva , but in this book she is Athena . Soon after they left Troy , a strong north wind began to blow . For nine days it pushed the ships across the dark sea . On the tenth day they came to a strange country . The people there were called the Lotus - eaters . They ate the sweet fruit of a plant called the lotus . Odysseus sent three men to find out who lived there . The Lotus - eaters gave the men some of their fruit . As soon as the men tasted it , they forgot everything . They forgot their homes and their families . They only wanted to stay there and eat lotus for ever . “ We are not going back to the ships , ” they said . “ We are happy here . ” Odysseus went after them . The three men were crying , but he dragged them back to the ships . He tied them under the benches . “ Everyone get on board , quickly ! ” he shouted . “ Don’t eat that fruit , or you will forget your way home . ” The men sat down at their oars , and the ships left that dangerous , sweet country behind . II . Nobody and the Cyclops After some days they came to the land of the Cyclopes . A Cyclops was a giant with only one eye in the middle of his forehead . The Cyclopes had no laws and no kings . Each of them lived alone with his sheep and goats in a cave in the mountains . Odysseus left eleven ships at a small island near that land . With one ship he sailed across to see the giants . He chose twelve men and took a bag of food and a jar of very strong red wine . They climbed up to a big cave . Its owner was out , but inside there were baskets of cheese and pens full of lambs .
