III . The Bag of Winds Next they came to a floating island with a wall of bronze all round it . Here lived Aeolus , the king of the winds . He could start and stop every wind in the world . Aeolus was very kind to Odysseus . For a whole month he asked questions about Troy , and Odysseus told him everything . When it was time to leave , Aeolus gave Odysseus a present . It was a big bag made of the skin of an ox . All the strong , stormy winds were inside it . Aeolus tied the bag with a silver string and put it on the ship . He kept only one wind out of the bag , a gentle west wind . It was the right wind to take them home . For nine days and nine nights the ships sailed east . Odysseus held the ropes of the sail himself and did not sleep once . On the tenth day they saw the coast of Ithaca . They were so close that they could see the smoke of people’s fires . Odysseus was so tired that he fell asleep at last . Then the men began to talk . “ Look at that big bag , ” said one of them . “ It must be full of gold and silver . Everyone gives our captain rich presents , and he never shares them with us . We are coming home from Troy with empty hands . ” “ Let’s open it and see what’s inside , ” said another . They untied the silver string . At once all the winds rushed out of the bag . A great storm caught the ships and carried them far out to sea . The men were crying , and the coast of Ithaca disappeared behind them . Odysseus woke up and saw what had happened . He was so unhappy that he wanted to jump into the sea . But he lay down in the ship , covered his head and said nothing . The storm blew them all the way back to the island of Aeolus . Odysseus went to the king’s house and asked for help again . But Aeolus was angry . “ Go away from my island ! ” he said . “ The gods must hate you . I cannot help a man that the gods hate . ” So they rowed away sadly . Now there was no wind at all , and the men were tired from rowing . After seven days they came to the land of the Laestrygonians . These were giants too , and they ate people . The ships went into a narrow harbour between high rocks , but Odysseus kept his own ship outside . The giants came to the cliffs and threw huge stones down at the ships below . They broke eleven ships and caught the sailors . “ Row for your lives ! ” shouted Odysseus . He cut his ship’s rope with his sword , and his men rowed hard . Only his ship got away , because it was outside the harbour . Now Odysseus had only one ship . He was glad to be alive , but his heart was heavy for his lost friends . IV . Circe’s Island Their one ship came to an island called Aeaea . For two days the men lay on the beach . They were tired and very sad . On the third day Odysseus climbed a hill and saw smoke rising from the middle of the island . Someone lived there , in a house among the trees . The next morning Odysseus divided the men into two groups . Eurylochus , his friend , took the second group to the house .
