VI . The Sirens , Scylla and Charybdis They sailed back to Circe’s island , and she took Odysseus to one side . “ Listen carefully , ” she said . “ There are more dangers on your way . First you will come to the Sirens . They sit in a green field by the sea and sing beautiful songs . Every sailor who hears them forgets his home and sails to them . Around them lie the bones of those poor men . Put soft wax into your men’s ears , so they cannot hear . If you want to hear the song yourself , tell them to tie you to the mast . And if you beg them to untie you , they must tie you tighter . “ After that you must choose between two ways . On one side there is a high rock with a cave in it . Scylla lives there . She is a monster with six long necks and six heads , and each head has three rows of teeth . When a ship goes past , each head takes one man . On the other side , under a low rock with a fig tree on it , lives Charybdis . Three times a day she drinks in the sea , and three times a day she throws it out again . No ship can escape her . Sail close to Scylla . It is better to lose six men than to lose your ship and everyone on it . ” The next morning they left . Soon the wind dropped , and the men began to row . Odysseus made some wax soft in his hands and put it into the ears of each man . Then they tied him to the mast with ropes . When they came near the island , the Sirens saw the ship and began to sing . “ Come here , famous Odysseus , glory of the Greeks , ” they sang . “ Stop your ship and listen to us . No sailor has ever passed us without hearing our sweet song . We know everything that happened at Troy . We know everything that happens in the whole world . ” Their voices were so beautiful that Odysseus wanted to go to them more than anything . “ Untie me ! ” he shouted . But the men could not hear him . Two of them , Eurylochus and Perimedes , got up and tied him even tighter . The others kept rowing . When the song stopped at last , the men untied their captain . Soon they saw smoke and great waves , and they heard a terrible noise . The men were so afraid that they dropped their oars . “ Friends , ” said Odysseus , “ we have been in danger before . Remember the Cyclops . I saved you then , and we will get through this too . Row hard , and keep the ship close to that rock . ”
