He did not tell them about Scylla . He knew they would stop rowing and hide . They sailed between the two rocks . On one side Charybdis was drinking the sea . The water turned round and round like water in a pot on a fire , and the men went white with fear . They were all watching Charybdis . At that moment Scylla reached down from her cave with her six heads and took six of the men . Odysseus heard them call his name for the last time . It was the saddest thing he saw in all his journeys at sea . But there was nothing he could do . The others rowed on , and they got past both monsters . VII . The Cattle of the Sun Soon they came to a beautiful island . They could hear cows and sheep in the fields . This was Thrinacia , the island of the Sun god . “ Friends , ” said Odysseus , “ Teiresias and Circe both told me about this island . They said that a great danger waits for us here . Let’s sail past it . ” But the men were very tired , and Eurylochus was angry . “ You are made of iron , Odysseus , ” he said . “ But we are only men . We want to sleep on land tonight . ” The other men agreed with him . Odysseus was one against many , so he said yes . “ Then you must all promise me one thing , ” he said . “ Do not touch the Sun god’s cattle or sheep . We have food and wine from Circe . Eat that . ” All the men promised , and they pulled the ship up on the beach . That night a storm came . After that the south wind blew for a whole month , and they could not sail away . While there was food from Circe , the men were fine . But soon the food was finished . They caught fish and birds when they could , but they were always hungry . One day Odysseus walked inland alone to pray to the gods . He washed his hands and prayed , and then the gods sent him into a deep sleep . While he was asleep , Eurylochus spoke to the men . “ Every death is bad , ” he said , “ but hunger is the worst . Let’s take the best of the Sun god’s cattle and give some to the gods . When we get home to Ithaca , we will build a fine temple to the Sun . And if the Sun is angry and breaks our ship , well , I would rather die quickly in the sea than slowly on this island . ” The men agreed . They chose the best cows and killed them . They cooked the meat over the fire . When Odysseus came back to the ship , he smelled the cooking meat . “ Oh , Father Zeus , ” he cried , “ why did you send me to sleep ? Now my men have done a terrible thing . ” He shouted at the men , but it was too late . The cows were dead . Then the gods sent strange signs . The skins of the cows moved along the ground . The meat on the fire made sounds like living cattle . But the men did not stop . For six days they had a feast .
