The Sun god knew everything . He went to Zeus . “ Punish the men of Odysseus , ” he said . “ They killed my cattle . If you don’t punish them , I will go down to the land of the dead and shine there instead . ” “ Keep shining for gods and men , Sun , ” said Zeus . “ I will break their ship with my lightning . ” On the seventh day the wind changed , and they sailed away . When they were far from land , Zeus sent a black cloud over the ship . A great wind broke the mast , and it fell on the man who was steering . Then Zeus threw his lightning . The ship went round and round , and all the men fell into the sea . Odysseus never saw any of them again . Only Odysseus was left . He tied the mast to the bottom part of the broken ship and sat on it . Then the south wind came and carried him back towards Charybdis . All night he floated , and in the morning he was near the terrible rock again . Charybdis began to drink the sea . Odysseus jumped up and held on to the fig tree above her . He hung there like a bat for many long hours . At last Charybdis threw the water out again , and his mast came up with it . He dropped down onto it and paddled away with his hands . For nine days he floated on the sea . On the tenth night the waves carried him to the island of Ogygia . There the goddess Calypso found him on the beach and took him to her home . VIII . Meanwhile in Ithaca Seven years went by , and Odysseus was still with Calypso . Nobody in Ithaca knew where he was . Most people thought he was dead . It was nearly twenty years since he sailed to Troy . In his house there was a lot of trouble . More than a hundred young men from Ithaca and the islands near it came every day . They were called the suitors , because each of them wanted to marry Penelope . The suitors sat in the great hall of Odysseus and ate and drank all day . They killed his sheep , pigs and cattle and drank his best wine . The worst of them were Antinous , who was proud and cruel , and Eurymachus , who was not honest . Penelope did not want a new husband . She loved Odysseus , and she still hoped that he was alive . So she thought of a trick . “ Young men , ” she told the suitors , “ I must make a burial cloth for Laertes , the old father of Odysseus . He will die one day , and he must have a fine cloth to lie in . When I have finished the cloth , I will choose a husband . ” Every day she sat at her loom and wove the big cloth . And every night , by the light of a lamp , she secretly took out the day’s work . So the cloth never grew . For three years the suitors believed her . But in the fourth year , one of her maids told them the secret . They came in the night and caught her . After that , Penelope had to finish the cloth . Now the suitors wanted her answer .
