Telemachus was now a young man of twenty . He hated the suitors , but he was alone against so many . One day a stranger came to the door . It was Athena , but she looked like an old friend of the family . Telemachus gave the guest a seat and some food . “ Your father is not dead , ” said Athena . “ He is alive somewhere , far away , and he will come home . You are not a child any more . Go and find news of him . Visit Nestor in Pylos and Menelaus in Sparta . They were at Troy with your father . ” Then she flew away like a bird . Telemachus understood that this was a goddess , and he felt braver . The next day he called the men of Ithaca together . “ The suitors are eating everything in my father’s house , ” he said . “ It is not right . Tell them to go home . ” But Antinous laughed . “ It’s not our fault , ” he said . “ It’s your mother’s fault . She gives us hope and then she tricks us . Let her choose a husband , and we will leave . ” Nobody helped Telemachus . Then Athena came again . This time she looked like Mentor , an old friend of Odysseus . She found a ship and good sailors for him . The old nurse Euryclea filled jars with wine and bags with flour . She was once the nurse of Odysseus , and later of Telemachus . “ Don’t tell my mother yet , ” Telemachus said to her . “ She will only cry . ” That night he sailed away secretly . Old King Nestor in Pylos had no news . In Sparta , King Menelaus and his beautiful wife Helen welcomed him to their palace . “ I have some news of your father , ” said Menelaus . “ On my way home I met the Old Man of the Sea . He knows many secrets . He told me that Odysseus is alive . He is on an island with a goddess called Calypso . He sits on the shore and cries , because he has no ship to take him home . ” Back in Ithaca , the suitors learned about the journey of Telemachus . They were angry . “ That boy will make trouble for us , ” said Antinous . “ Give me a fast ship and twenty men . We will wait for him at sea and kill him on his way home . ” Penelope heard about all this . She lay in her room without eating , crying for her husband and her son . But that night Athena sent her a dream . “ Don’t be afraid , ” said the dream . “ Your son will come home safely . A goddess is looking after him . ” IX . Calypso Lets Him Go Up on Mount Olympus , Athena spoke to Zeus . Poseidon was far away at a feast , so he could not hear them . “ Father Zeus , ” said Athena , “ remember poor Odysseus . He is a prisoner on Calypso’s island , and he cannot get home . And his son is in danger too . ” “ You are right , my child , ” said Zeus . He called Hermes . “ Go to Calypso , ” he said . “ Tell her that Odysseus must go home now . ”
