“ Don’t forget your prayers , ” he said . “ Don’t hunt too much on Sundays , but don’t miss a good whale either ! ” At last Peleg pulled him into their small boat , and they rowed back towards the land . We gave three cheers , and the Pequod sailed out alone into the cold Atlantic Ocean . Now I got to know the officers and the crew . The captain has three or four officers who help him to run the ship . They are called the mates . On a whaling ship each mate also commands one of the small boats . The boats are lowered into the sea when the men see a whale . The first mate was Starbuck . He was tall and thin , and he came from Nantucket . He was a serious , careful man , and very brave . But he did not look for danger . “ I will have no man in my boat , ” he often said , “ who is not afraid of a whale . ” He had a young wife and a small son at home , and he thought about them often . The second mate was Stubb , from Cape Cod . He was always cheerful and calm , and he always had a short black pipe in his mouth . He laughed and joked even in the greatest danger . The third mate was Flask , from Martha’s Vineyard , an island near Nantucket . He was short and strong , with a round red face . Flask was not afraid of anything . He thought that every whale was his own personal enemy . Each mate had his own harpooneer . Queequeg was Starbuck’s harpooneer . Stubb’s harpooneer was Tashtego , a Native American from Gay Head , on Martha’s Vineyard . He had long , shining black hair and high cheekbones , and his people had always been great hunters . Flask’s harpooneer was Daggoo , from Africa . He was very tall , with big gold rings in his ears , and he walked like a proud king . Little Flask often stood on Daggoo’s broad shoulders to look out for whales , and Daggoo stood as still as a rock . But the most important man on the ship was still a mystery . For many days after Christmas , nobody saw Captain Ahab at all . VII . Captain Ahab We sailed south , and every day the air became a little warmer . I often went on deck and looked towards the back of the ship . That part of the deck is called the quarter - deck , and only the captain and his officers walk there . Every time I felt a strange fear . Would Ahab be there ? Then one grey morning I looked up , and there he was . He was standing on the quarter - deck . He was a tall , broad man , and he looked as strong as a bronze statue . A thin white scar ran down from his grey hair , over one side of his face , and disappeared into his collar . It looked like the mark that lightning leaves on a tall tree . But the strangest thing was his leg . One of his legs was not a real leg . It was made of white ivory , and the ivory came from the jaw of a sperm whale .
