I did not know what he meant . I told him that a man should look to God , not to another person , to make his life better . “ But God may give him the instrument , Jane ! ” he said . Then his voice changed and became hard and cold . “ You have seen how I love Miss Ingram , haven’t you ? Do you not think that she would be the one to make me new ? ” Then he walked away quickly , and I was left alone among the flowers . X . Gateshead Again That same afternoon a visitor came to see me . It was Robert , Bessie’s husband , the coachman from Gateshead , and he was dressed in black . “ I’m afraid I bring bad news , miss , ” he said . “ Mr John Reed died in London a week ago . He had wasted all his money and gone deep into debt , and they say that he took his own life . The news gave Mrs Reed a stroke , and now she is very ill . She has been asking for you , Miss Jane , because she wants to see you before she dies . ” I went to Mr Rochester and asked him for a holiday . He was surprised to hear that I had any relations at all . He did not want me to go , but at last he agreed . He owed me fifteen pounds in wages , and he offered me a note for fifty . When I refused it , he gave me ten pounds instead . With a laugh , he said that with fifty I might stay away for three months , and that I must come back for the other five . “ Before you go , Jane , ” he said , “ there is something else . I shall soon be married , and when I am , Adèle will go to school and you will need a new place . ” “ Yes , sir , I shall put an advertisement in the paper . ” “ You will do no such thing ! Promise me that you will leave it to me to find you a new place . ” I promised , and then I said goodbye to him , and the next day I left for Gateshead . Nine years had passed since I had left Gateshead Hall , but the house looked the same . Bessie was very happy to see me , and she cried a little . My cousins Eliza and Georgiana received me coldly . I saw that the two sisters hardly spoke to each other . Eliza had become a tall , thin , serious woman who thought only of her religion and her daily duties . Georgiana was fat and pretty and thought only of parties and London . My aunt lay in the same large bed in which she had slept when I was a child . Her face was as hard and cold as ever . “ Is this Jane Eyre ? ” she asked . “ I am Jane Eyre , aunt , and I have come to see how you are . ”
