XI . Midsummer I had told nobody at Thornfield when I would return , so nobody was waiting for me . I left the coach at Millcote and walked the last few miles across the fields in the soft June evening . As I came near the house , I saw Mr Rochester sitting on a stile with a book and a pencil in his hands . My heart began to beat fast , and for a moment I wanted to turn back . “ Hello ! ” he cried , and he put away his book . “ There you are ! It is just like you to come quietly over the fields at evening , like a dream or a shadow . What have you been doing for this last month ? ” “ I have been with my aunt , sir , who is dead . ” “ That is a true Jane answer ! And now you come back from the other world and meet me here alone . If I dared , I would touch you , to see if you are real . ” He laughed and went on . “ You have been away from me for a whole month , and I am sure that you had forgotten me completely . ” I knew that I should soon have to leave Thornfield , but I could not help being glad to see him . I told him that I was happy to be back , and that wherever he was , that was my home , my only home . Then I hurried past him into the house before he could see my face . For two weeks after that , nothing happened : nobody spoke of the wedding , and no preparations were made . Mr Rochester did not visit Miss Ingram at all . He was kinder and more cheerful than I had ever known him . Then came a lovely evening at midsummer . Adèle had gone to bed , and I went out into the orchard to enjoy the warm air and the smell of the flowers . I had not been there long when I saw Mr Rochester walking among the trees . I tried to slip away quietly , but he called me back . “ Jane , come and look at this moth , which reminds me of the West Indies , ” he said . “ On such a night as this , it is a shame to sit in the house . ” We walked together down the path towards the great old chestnut tree at the end of the orchard . For a while he talked about the trees and the moth , and then his voice changed . “ Jane , you have grown fond of Thornfield , haven’t you ? And of little Adèle , and of good Mrs Fairfax ? ” “ Yes , sir , I am fond of them all . ” “ It is a pity , ” he said , and he sighed , “ but in this world nothing lasts . In about a month I hope to be a married man , and then you must leave . But I have already found you a new place . You will be the governess of the five daughters of Mrs Dionysius O’Gall , of Bitternutt Lodge , in Ireland . You will like Ireland , I think , because the people there are very warm - hearted . ” “ It is a long way off , sir , ” I said quietly . “ From what , Jane ? ” he asked . “ From England and from Thornfield , and from you , sir . ” I could not stop my tears , and I was crying now , without a sound .
