“ Come to me , come to me entirely now , ” he said , and he held me close . Then he added in a low voice , as if to himself , “ God forgive me , and let no man come between us . She is mine , and I will keep her . ” While we stood there , the weather changed , and a cold wind came suddenly through the trees , and the sky grew dark . Then the rain began , and Mr Rochester hurried me back to the house . That night a terrible storm broke over Thornfield , with loud thunder and bright lightning . In the morning Adèle ran to tell me that the great chestnut tree at the end of the orchard had been struck by lightning in the night . Half of it had split away . XII . The Wedding The next month was strange and happy . Mrs Fairfax could hardly believe the news , and though she was kind , she warned me to be careful . “ He is a proud man , ” she said , “ and rich men do not often marry their governesses . ” Mr Rochester wanted to give me everything . He took me to Millcote and wanted to buy me rich silk dresses and expensive jewels , and he talked of the pearls and diamonds that I would wear . But I did not want to be dressed like a doll , and the presents made me feel uncomfortable . I could not bear to depend on him for everything . Then I thought of my uncle in Madeira . If he could leave me a little money one day , I should not come to my husband with empty hands . So that same day I wrote to John Eyre to tell him that I was going to marry Mr Rochester . At last only one day was left before the wedding . Mr Rochester had gone away on business , and he was not coming back until late that night . My new white dress and my veil were ready in my room . I could not sleep , so I walked in the orchard and looked at the broken chestnut tree . Then I sat by the fire and waited for him . When he came home at last , I told him about the strange thing that had happened the night before . I had dreamed that Thornfield was a ruin , a home for bats and owls . When I woke up , there was a light in my room , and a woman was standing by my wardrobe . She was tall and big , with thick dark hair , and she wore a long white dress . “ Did you see her face ? ” asked Mr Rochester . “ Yes , I saw it in the mirror , and it was a horrible face , sir , purple and swollen , with red eyes . She took my veil and put it on her own head . Then she tore it in two and threw it on the floor and stamped on it . Then she came close to my bed with her candle and looked at me , and I fainted with fear . When I woke up , it was morning , and she had gone . But my veil was lying on the floor , torn in half . ”
