XIII . Moor House A coach came along the road , and I asked the driver where he was going . It was a place far away . I gave him all my money to take me as far as it would go . Two days later he put me down at a crossroads called Whitcross , in the middle of a wide , empty moor . Only then did I realise that I had left my parcel in the coach . I had no money , no clothes , no food and no friends . I spent that night on the moor , lying in the heather under a rock . The next day I walked to a village and tried to find work , but nobody would give me any . I was too proud to beg . At last I offered my gloves for a piece of bread , but the woman refused . I spent another night outside in the rain . The next evening I was so hungry that I asked a little girl for the cold porridge that she was about to throw to a pig . She gave it to me , and I ate it all . On the third night , wet and almost dead with cold and hunger , I saw a light far away across the moor . I followed it until I came to an old stone house . Through the window I saw two young ladies reading by the fire and an old servant knitting . I knocked at the door , but the servant , Hannah , would not let me in . “ Go away , ” she said . “ We cannot take in beggars at this time of night . ” Then she shut the door . I fell down on the wet step and cried . “ I can only die , ” I said aloud , “ and I believe in God . Let me try to wait for his will in silence . ” “ All men must die , ” said a voice close to me , “ but not all must meet a slow and early death . That would be your fate if you died here of hunger . ” A tall young man who had just come home was standing behind me . He knocked loudly at the door and told Hannah to let me in . The two young ladies , his sisters Diana and Mary , gave me bread and milk and dried my clothes . When their brother asked my name , I said that it was Jane Elliott , because I did not want anyone to find me . For three days I lay ill in a little bedroom , and the family looked after me very kindly . The house was called Moor House , and the family name was Rivers . Their father had died not long before , and they were not rich . Diana and Mary worked as governesses in the south of England . Their brother , St John Rivers , was the priest of the village of Morton , near by .
