When I woke up , I was in my own bed in the nursery , and a man was sitting beside me . It was Mr Lloyd , the apothecary , a kind of doctor whom Mrs Reed called when the servants were ill . She always called a real doctor for herself and her children . He stayed with me until I felt calmer . The next day he came again and asked me why I was so unhappy . “ I have no father or mother , ” I said , “ and nobody here loves me , and they locked me in the red room , where my uncle died . ” “ Would you like to go to school ? ” he asked . I did not know much about schools , but I thought about it for a moment . A school would mean a new life , far from Gateshead and far from John Reed . So I said that I should like to go . Mr Lloyd nodded and said that we would see what could be done . Later I heard from the servants that he had talked to my aunt about it . II . Leaving Gateshead Weeks passed , and nobody said a word about school . My aunt now kept me away from her children even more than before . I slept alone in a small room , ate my meals alone and spent my days in the nursery , while my cousins played in the drawing room . I did not mind very much , because in a way I was glad of the quiet . One morning in January Bessie ran up to the nursery , washed my face and hands quickly and brushed my hair . She told me to hurry , because I was wanted downstairs . When I went into the breakfast room , I saw a tall man standing by the fire . He was dressed all in black . To my eyes he looked like a stone pillar , with a long , narrow face and thick grey eyebrows . “ This is the little girl I wrote to you about , ” said Mrs Reed . The man turned his head slowly towards me . His name was Mr Brocklehurst , and he ran a school for poor girls called Lowood . “ Her size is small , ” he said . “ What is her age ? ” “ Ten years , ” said my aunt . He looked at me for a long time as if he did not believe it . Then he asked my name and whether I was a good child . I could not say yes , because in that house everyone said I was bad , so I was silent . “ Do you know where the wicked go after death ? ” he asked . “ They go to hell , ” I answered , “ and hell is a pit full of fire . ” “ And should you like to fall into that pit and to be burning there for ever ? ” “ No , sir , ” I said . “ What must you do to avoid it ? ” I thought for a moment , and then I gave my answer . “ I must keep in good health , and not die . ” Mr Brocklehurst was not pleased with this answer at all . He asked whether I liked to read the Bible . Then he gave me a little book about a naughty girl who had died suddenly as a punishment for telling lies . After that , my aunt spoke to him in a low , serious voice .
