On the morning of the nineteenth I got up at five o’clock . Bessie lit a candle and helped me to dress . It was still dark when the coach came to the gate . Bessie put her arms round me and kissed me before the guard lifted me in . I had never travelled before , and Lowood was fifty miles away . We drove all day through many towns . When night came , we were going through deep woods where the wind was loud in the trees . At last I fell asleep , and I did not wake until the coach stopped . III . Lowood A tall woman with dark hair and dark eyes met me at the door with a candle in her hand . She looked at me kindly and said that I was very young to be sent so far alone . When she heard that I was tired and hungry , she told one of the teachers to give me some supper before I went to bed . Later I learned that this lady was Miss Temple , the head teacher of the school . Miss Miller , the teacher , led me through a long passage into a large room with two long tables . About eighty girls of all ages were sitting in plain brown dresses and doing their lessons for the next day . At nine o’clock they went up to bed . I followed them to a long room with many beds , two girls in each . Early in the morning a bell rang loudly while it was still dark . The room was so cold that the water in the basins was frozen , but we had to wash in it anyway . Then we went down for prayers and lessons , and at last for breakfast . I was very hungry , because I had eaten almost nothing the day before . But the porridge was burnt and tasted so bad that most of the girls could not eat it . I ate a spoonful or two and then had to stop . Many of us went hungry until dinner , which was not much better . The teachers were not all alike . Miss Smith was busy and cheerful , Miss Scatcherd was hard and sharp , and the French teacher was rather harsh too . But Miss Temple was gentle and fair , and all the girls loved her . At noon Miss Temple stood up in front of the school and said that she had something to tell us . “ This morning you had a breakfast which you could not eat , ” she said , “ and you must be hungry . So I have ordered bread and cheese for all of you . ” The other teachers looked at her in surprise . She added calmly that it was to be done on her own responsibility . The bread and cheese was brought in , and the whole school was very happy . In the afternoon we were allowed to go out into the garden . It was a cold , wet day . The bigger girls ran about to keep warm , while the little ones stood together by the wall . I walked alone until I noticed a girl who was sitting on a stone bench and reading a book . She seemed to be a few years older than I was . As I also liked reading , I asked her about her book , which was called Rasselas .
