IV . Helen Three weeks after I arrived , Mr Brocklehurst came to the school . I had been dreading his visit because of what Mrs Reed had told him . So I sat at the back of the room and tried to hide behind my slate . Mr Brocklehurst walked about the room and talked to Miss Temple in a loud voice . I soon heard that he did not like the bread and cheese she had given us . “ My plan for these girls , ” he said , “ is not to make them comfortable , but to make them patient and humble . When you put bread and cheese into their mouths instead of burnt porridge , you feed their bodies , but you starve their souls . ” Then he noticed a girl whose red hair curled naturally . He ordered that all of it should be cut off , because he did not want vanity at Lowood . Miss Temple tried to explain , but he would not listen . At that moment three ladies came into the room . They were his wife and his two daughters , dressed in fine silk and velvet , with long hair that was curled beautifully . I was holding my slate very carefully , but it slipped from my hands and fell to the floor with a crash . Everyone turned and looked at me . “ A careless girl ! ” said Mr Brocklehurst . “ It is the new pupil , I see . Let the child who broke her slate come forward ! ” Two big girls pushed me to the front of the room . Mr Brocklehurst made me stand on a high stool , so that everyone could see me . “ Ladies , ” he said , “ Miss Temple , teachers and children , you all see this girl , who looks like an ordinary child . But I must warn you that she is a liar ! Her kind aunt took her in as an orphan and brought her up like her own daughter . But this girl repaid her with wickedness , and the good lady had to send her away . Teachers , watch her , and children , keep away from her . She must stand on that stool for half an hour , and nobody must speak to her for the rest of the day . ” There I stood , while the whole school looked at me , and I felt that I could not bear the shame . But then Helen Burns walked past me on her way to the front of the room . As she passed , she looked up and smiled at me . It was a smile so full of courage and love that it gave me the strength I needed . I stood straight , and I held my head up until the half hour was over . When everyone had gone , I threw myself on the floor and cried . I had hoped to make friends at Lowood and to win the teachers ’ respect , but now everyone thought I was a liar . Helen brought me some bread and coffee and sat down beside me on the floor . “ Most of the girls feel sorry for you , Jane , ” she said . “ Mr Brocklehurst is not loved here , and the teachers will judge you by what you do . If all the world hated you , but your own heart told you that you were good , you would not be without friends . ”
