I held her tightly and said that I would stay with her and that no one should take me away . She asked if I was warm , and then she kissed me and said good night , and we both fell asleep . When I woke up , it was day . A nurse was carrying me back through the passages to my own bed . Nobody scolded me . Later I learned that Miss Temple had found me early in the morning , with my face against Helen’s shoulder and my arms round her neck . I was asleep , and Helen was dead . Her grave is in the churchyard at Brocklebridge . For fifteen years it was covered only by grass . Now there is a grey stone there with her name and one Latin word , Resurgam , which means “ I shall rise again . ” V . Thornfield After the fever , things at Lowood changed for the better . Many people heard how many girls had died . When they asked questions , they found out that the school stood in an unhealthy place , that the food was bad and that the clothes were too thin . Rich and kind people gave money , and a new building was put up in a better place . Mr Brocklehurst kept his position , but other men now shared it with him . After that the school became a good and useful place . I stayed at Lowood for eight more years , six as a pupil and two as a teacher . All that time Miss Temple was like a mother and a friend to me . When she married and went to live far away , I felt that the best part of my life at Lowood had gone with her . I stood at my window and looked at the hills and the white road that ran between them . I wanted to see the world that lay beyond them . I wanted freedom , and if I could not have freedom , I wanted at least a new kind of work in a new place . So I put an advertisement in the local newspaper , offering to teach young children French , drawing and music . A week later I received one answer , from a Mrs Fairfax at Thornfield , near the town of Millcote . She needed a teacher for one little girl under ten years of age . The pay was thirty pounds a year , which was twice what I received at Lowood . The school gave me a good reference , and my plans were soon made . Shortly before I left , Bessie came to visit me . She had married Robert , the coachman at Gateshead , and she had a little boy of her own now . She told me news of the Reeds : John was wild and wasted his mother’s money . The two girls could not bear each other . She also told me something that surprised me . “ About seven years ago , ” she said , “ a gentleman came to Gateshead and asked for you . He was your father’s brother , Mr Eyre . He was going abroad to Madeira , where he had a business selling wine . Mrs Reed told him that you were at school fifty miles away , and he could not stay to visit you . ”
