VI . The Master The autumn passed quietly , and so did the first weeks of winter . I liked my work and I liked Adèle , and Mrs Fairfax was always kind , yet I was not quite content . Sometimes I climbed up to the roof of the house and looked far away over the fields and hills . I wished for more life , more people and more knowledge of the world . Women are supposed to be very calm , but women feel just as men feel . They need work and a place to use their minds , just as their brothers do . One cold afternoon in January Mrs Fairfax asked me to take a letter to the post office in Hay , a village about two miles away . Adèle had a cold and was staying in , so I put on my bonnet and cloak and set off alone . The lane was hard with frost , and the air was very still . Halfway to Hay I sat down on a stile to rest , while the moon rose pale over the hills . Then I heard a horse coming along the lane . A large dog ran past me first , black and white , with a head like a lion . Behind it came a tall horse with a rider on its back . Just as they passed me , the horse slipped on a sheet of ice and fell , and the rider fell with it . The dog barked loudly , and I ran down to help . The rider was trying to free himself from his horse . He was a man of middle height , with a broad chest , a dark face and heavy eyebrows . He was perhaps thirty - five , and he was not handsome . If he had been young and handsome , I should probably have been too shy to speak to him . But because he was rough and frowning , I felt quite at ease . “ Are you hurt , sir , and can I do anything to help ? ” “ You must just stand on one side , ” he said . He got up slowly . But when he tried to stand on his foot , he cried out in pain and sat down again on the stile . “ If you are hurt , sir , I can fetch someone from Thornfield or from Hay . ” “ Thank you , but I shall manage . I have no broken bones , only a sprain . ” He looked at me closely . “ But where do you come from , at this time of the evening ? ” “ I come from just below , from Thornfield Hall , where I am the governess . ” “ Ah , the governess ! ” he said , as if he had forgotten something . “ Well , you can help me by bringing my horse to me , if you are not afraid of him . ”
