“ I knew , ” he said , “ that you would do me good in some way , at some time . I saw it in your eyes when I first met you . My dear helper , good night ! ” There was a strange light in his eyes , and his voice was soft . At last I pulled my hand away and went back to my room . But I did not sleep at all that night . I was tossed on a wild , happy sea of feeling until morning came . VIII . The Guests The next day I wanted to see Mr Rochester , and at the same time I was afraid of seeing him . But he did not come to the schoolroom . When I went down to the kitchen , I found Grace Poole sitting there and sewing calmly , as if nothing had happened . “ Good morning , miss , ” she said in her dull voice . “ I hear that the master was nearly burnt in his bed last night . ” I stared at her . She asked whether I had heard anything in the night . When I told her that I had heard someone laugh , she advised me to lock my door at night . I was amazed that she was not in prison and that she spoke so coolly . Why had Mr Rochester not sent her away , and did she know some secret about him ? That afternoon I learned from Mrs Fairfax that Mr Rochester had gone away . He had ridden to Mr Eshton’s house , ten miles on the other side of Millcote , where a large party of friends had met . Mrs Fairfax thought that he might stay for weeks . I asked her , as calmly as I could , who was there . “ Fine ladies and gentlemen , ” she said . “ Miss Blanche Ingram is one of them , and she is the most beautiful woman in the county . Mr Rochester admires her very much , I believe . ” That night I looked hard at myself in the mirror and spoke to myself severely . “ Jane Eyre , you are a fool , ” I said . “ You are a poor , plain governess , and do you really believe that a rich gentleman could ever love you ? ” Then I took my pencils and drew two pictures . One was a plain picture of myself , poor and simple . The other was a lovely lady , as I imagined Miss Ingram to be . Whenever I began to dream about Mr Rochester again , I looked at the two pictures , and I was calm . Two weeks passed before a letter came . Mr Rochester was coming home in three days , and he was bringing a large party of guests with him . The house was cleaned from top to bottom , and fires were lit in all the bedrooms . Only Grace Poole went on sewing upstairs , coming down for her meals and her beer . The guests arrived on a fine spring evening , a large party of ladies and gentlemen . I watched them from a window as they rode up the drive . In front rode Mr Rochester on his black horse , with Pilot running beside him . Next to him rode a tall lady in a purple riding dress , with long black curls . I knew at once that it was Miss Ingram .
