“ Do you forgive me , Jane ? ” “ I cannot tell until I have thought about it , sir . If I have said nothing silly , I will try to forgive you , but it was not right . ” Then I told him that a stranger had arrived at the house while he was out . His name was Mr Mason , and he had come from the West Indies , from Spanish Town in Jamaica . When Mr Rochester heard this , his face went white . He took my hand and held it tightly , and he almost fell . “ Jane , ” he said , “ I have had a blow , I have had a blow , Jane . ” IX . A Night of Terror I helped him to a chair and fetched him a glass of wine . When he had drunk it , he was calmer . “ Jane , ” he said , “ if all those people came and spat at me , what would you do ? ” “ I would turn them out of the room , sir , if I could . ” “ And if I went to them , and they only looked at me coldly and left me alone , one by one , what then ? Would you go with them ? ” “ I think not , sir , because I should stay with you and comfort you as well as I could . ” He asked me to go to Mr Mason quietly and tell him that Mr Rochester wanted to see him . I did so , and then I went to bed . Late at night I heard Mr Rochester laughing and talking with Mr Mason as he showed him to his room . His voice sounded cheerful , and I fell asleep in peace . In the middle of the night a terrible scream woke me . It came from the third storey , right above my room . Then I heard a fight and a voice that cried , “ Help , help , Rochester , for God’s sake , come ! ” Doors opened all along the passage , and the guests ran out of their rooms in fear . The ladies screamed and held on to the gentlemen , asking what had happened . At last Mr Rochester came down from the third storey with a candle in his hand . “ All is well , ” he said calmly . “ A servant has had a bad dream , that is all . She is an excitable person and she thought she saw a ghost . Now , everyone , go back to bed . ” He was so calm and so cheerful that at last they all went back to their rooms . I went back to mine too . But I did not go to sleep , because I felt sure that I should be needed . I dressed and waited , and after some time someone knocked softly at my door . “ Are you up and dressed ? ” asked Mr Rochester’s voice . “ Then come out quietly , and bring a sponge and some smelling salts if you have them . ” I took them and followed him up to the third storey . He unlocked one of the small black doors , and we went into a room with a bed and a large cupboard . On the other side of the room there was a second door , half hidden by a curtain . From behind it came a sound like the growl of an animal . Mr Rochester told me to wait and went in , and I heard that strange laugh again before the door closed .
