The next day Mr Gardiner went fishing with the men , and the ladies called at the great house . Miss Bingley was there too . She was cold to Elizabeth , but when Mr Darcy came in , she could not hide her jealousy . “ Pray , Miss Eliza , ” she said , “ is the regiment no longer at Meryton ? That must be a great loss to your family . ” She did not dare to say Mr Wickham’s name , but Elizabeth knew what she meant and answered calmly . Miss Darcy , however , turned red and looked at the floor . Miss Bingley did not know what she had done . She had only meant to make Elizabeth look foolish before Mr Darcy , and she did not know that she had touched his sister’s deepest pain . After the visitors had left , Miss Bingley tried to make him laugh at Elizabeth’s looks . “ When we first knew her , you said she was no beauty at all . ” “ Yes , ” said Mr Darcy , who could no longer control himself . “ But that was only when I first knew her . For many months now I have thought her one of the handsomest women I know . ” Then he walked away , and Miss Bingley was left with nothing but the pleasure of having forced him to say what gave no one any pain but herself . XII . Lydia Runs Away At Lambton the next morning two letters came from Jane at once . The first had gone to the wrong place , which was why it was late , and Elizabeth opened it first . “ Dearest Lizzy , a most serious thing has happened . Do not be alarmed , we are all well . What I have to say is about poor Lydia . A letter came at midnight from Colonel Forster to tell us that she had gone off to Scotland with one of his officers . To own the truth , with Wickham ! Imagine our surprise . To Kitty , however , it does not seem so wholly strange . I am very , very sorry . So foolish a match on both sides ! But I am willing to hope the best . He must know that my father can give her nothing . ” With shaking hands Elizabeth opened the second letter . It had been written a day later . “ By this time , my dearest sister , you have my hurried letter . I wish this may be clearer , but my head is so confused , and I have bad news for you that cannot wait . Foolish as a marriage between Mr Wickham and our poor Lydia would be , we are now anxious to be sure it has taken place . There is too much reason to fear they are not gone to Scotland . Colonel Forster has followed them as far as London , but no further . My father is going to London to try to find her . My mother is very ill and keeps to her room . I must ask you all to come home as soon as you can . I am sure my uncle’s advice and help would mean the world to us . ” “ Oh ! where , where is my uncle ? ” cried Elizabeth , as she jumped up from her seat . She ran to the door , and as she reached it , a servant opened it and Mr Darcy came in . Her pale face and wild manner made him stop .
