After some time Mr Bennet came home and left the search to his brother - in - law . He was as calm as ever , and he said very little . But one evening , when Elizabeth said how sorry she was for all he had suffered , he answered her . “ Say nothing of that , Lizzy . Who should suffer but myself ? It has been my own doing , and I ought to feel it . ” “ You must not be too severe upon yourself , ” said Elizabeth . “ No , Lizzy , let me once in my life feel how much I have been to blame . I am not afraid of being overcome by the feeling . It will pass away soon enough . ” At last a letter came from Mr Gardiner . He had found Lydia and Wickham in London . They were not married , and they had not intended to be . But Wickham was now ready to marry her if Mr Bennet would give Lydia her small share of the family money and add one hundred pounds a year . Mr Gardiner advised him to agree . “ Wickham’s a fool if he takes her with a penny less than ten thousand pounds , ” said Mr Bennet . “ My brother must have paid him a great deal . How shall I ever pay him back ? ” Mrs Bennet , however , forgot all else in her joy . “ My dear , dear Lydia ! She will be married at sixteen ! And she will want wedding clothes ! I will write to my sister Gardiner about them at once . ” She did not stop to think how the marriage had been bought , or what kind of husband her daughter was getting . Mr Bennet would not give one penny for clothes , and at first he would not let the young couple come to Longbourn . Wickham was to leave the regiment and join a new one in the far north of England . Only after Jane and Elizabeth begged him did their father agree to receive Lydia and her husband for a short visit before they went north . XIII . Mrs Wickham The day of the wedding came , and soon after it the young couple arrived at Longbourn . Mrs Bennet ran to meet them . Mr Bennet received them coldly . Jane was shocked , and Elizabeth was disgusted . Lydia was still Lydia : wild , loud , fearless and untamed , and she turned from sister to sister , asking them to wish her joy . Wickham was no more ashamed than she was . His manners were as pleasant as ever , and he smiled and talked so easily that Elizabeth could hardly believe her eyes . At dinner Lydia moved quickly to her mother’s right hand . “ Ah , Jane , ” she said , “ I take your place now , and you must go lower , because I am a married woman . ” She held out her hand so that everyone could see her ring . The next morning she sat with Jane and Elizabeth and told them about the wedding . “ We were married at St Clement’s in London . My uncle and aunt were horrid dull all the time I was with them . And just as the carriage came to take us to church , my uncle was called away on business . I was so afraid I did not know what to do , because my uncle was to give me away . But luckily he came back again in ten minutes . However , I thought later that if he had been kept away , the wedding need not have been put off , because Mr Darcy might have done as well . ”
