Elizabeth read the letter with a flutter of feelings . Mr Darcy had done all this for a girl whom he could not respect , and he had dealt with a man whom he most wished to avoid . He had even paid money to the man whose very name it hurt him to say . Had he done it for her ? Her heart told her that he had . But she was ashamed to think so . For herself she was humbled , but she was proud of him . She read her aunt’s praise of him over and over again . It was hardly enough , but it pleased her . Later that day Mr Wickham joined her on her walk . “ I find from our uncle and aunt that you have seen Pemberley , ” he said . “ Did you see the old housekeeper ? Poor Reynolds , she was always very fond of me . But of course she did not mention my name to you . ” “ Yes , she did . ” “ And what did she say ? ” “ That you were gone into the army , and she was afraid you had not turned out well . At such a distance as that , you know , things are often told wrongly . ” He bit his lip . Then he spoke of the church living which he had lost . She said quietly that she had heard another story : that he had once sworn never to go into the church , and that he had taken money instead . He did not answer at once . Then she gave him her hand with a good - humoured smile . “ Come , Mr Wickham , we are brother and sister , you know . Do not let us quarrel about the past . In future , I hope we shall always be of one mind . ” He kissed her hand with polite care , though he hardly knew how to look , and they went into the house . Soon after that the young couple left for the north . Mrs Bennet cried and said that she would not see her dear Lydia for a year at least . “ He is as fine a fellow as ever I saw , ” said Mr Bennet , as soon as they were out of the house . “ He smiles , and smirks , and makes love to us all . I am very proud of him . I defy even Sir William Lucas himself to produce a more valuable son - in - law . ” XIV . A Visit from Lady Catherine Soon after the Wickhams had gone , news came that Mr Bingley was returning to Netherfield for the shooting season . Mrs Bennet was in a fever of joy and hope . Jane said that the news did not affect her at all , but her colour changed when she said it . On the third morning after his arrival Mr Bingley rode up to Longbourn , and Mr Darcy was with him . Elizabeth could hardly breathe . Her mother received Mr Bingley with great warmth and Mr Darcy with a cold , short bow . She did not know what she owed him , and it cut Elizabeth to the heart . Mr Darcy said very little , and he did not sit near Elizabeth . Mr Bingley , however , looked at Jane a great deal , and every five minutes he seemed to admire her more .
