“ Mr Darcy , of all men ! ” laughed Mr Bennet . “ Mr Darcy , who never looks at any woman but to see a fault , and who probably never looked at you in his life ! It is too good ! For what do we live , but to make sport for our neighbours , and laugh at them in our turn ? ” Elizabeth tried to laugh with him , but she had never found it so hard . Her father had cruelly hurt her by what he said of Mr Darcy’s coldness . She could only wonder whether , instead of his seeing too little , she might have hoped too much . XV . One Word from You Elizabeth half expected a letter of excuse from Mr Darcy . Instead , Mr Bingley brought him to Longbourn a few days later . The young people went out for a walk . Mr Bingley and Jane soon fell behind , and Kitty left to visit Maria Lucas . Elizabeth and Mr Darcy walked on alone . Elizabeth gathered all her courage . “ Mr Darcy , I am a very selfish creature . To ease my own feelings , I do not care how much I may be hurting yours . I can no longer help thanking you for your great kindness to my poor sister . Ever since I have known it , I have been most anxious to tell you how grateful I feel . ” “ I am sorry , very sorry , ” he replied , “ that you have ever been told of it . I did not think Mrs Gardiner was so little to be trusted . ” “ You must not blame my aunt . Lydia was careless and spoke first . Let me thank you again and again , in the name of all my family . ” “ If you will thank me , ” he replied , “ let it be for yourself alone . I shall not try to deny that the wish to make you happy added force to my other reasons . But your family owe me nothing . Much as I respect them , I believe I thought only of you . ” Elizabeth was too shy and confused to say a word . After a short pause he added , “ You are too generous to trifle with me . If your feelings are still what they were last April , tell me so at once . My love and my wishes are unchanged . But one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever . ” Elizabeth now forced herself to speak . Though not very smoothly , she told him that her feelings had changed so much since that time that she now heard his words with thanks and pleasure . The joy which this reply gave him was such as he had probably never felt before , and he spoke as warmly as a man deeply in love can be expected to do . Had she been able to meet his eyes , she might have seen how well the look of pure delight suited him . They walked on without knowing which way they went . There was too much to be thought , and felt , and said . She soon learnt that his aunt had called on him in London on her way home . She had told him about her visit to Longbourn and about Elizabeth’s answers . But her plan had worked against her .
