II . A Walk Through the Mud Over the next weeks the ladies of Longbourn and Netherfield met often . Mr Bingley’s sisters were polite to Jane , though they did not care much for the rest of the family . Their brother clearly admired Jane more and more . Jane liked him very much too , but she was quiet and calm by nature , and her feelings did not show on her face . “ It is not always wise to hide your feelings so well , ” Charlotte said to her friend . “ If a woman hides her love from the man himself , she may lose the chance of winning him . Jane should show more love than she feels , not less . ” “ But she does not know him well yet . She has only danced with him four times and dined with him four times . ” “ Well , ” said Charlotte , “ I wish Jane every success with all my heart . If she married him tomorrow , I think she would have as good a chance of a happy life as if she studied him for a whole year . Happiness in marriage is only a matter of chance . It is better to know as little as you can about the person you are going to spend your life with . ” Elizabeth laughed and said that Charlotte would never act that way herself . While she was watching Mr Bingley and her sister , she did not see that she herself was being watched . At the ball Mr Darcy had hardly allowed her to be pretty . But soon he began to find that her face was made unusually bright and clever by the fine look of her dark eyes . He found her figure light and pleasing , and he was caught by the easy playful way she talked . He began to listen when she spoke to others . To her , he was only the man who made himself pleasant nowhere , and who had not thought her handsome enough to dance with . One evening at the house of Sir William Lucas , Charlotte’s father , Miss Bingley came up to Mr Darcy . “ I can guess what you are thinking , ” she said . “ You are thinking how dull these people are . ” “ You are quite wrong . My mind was more pleasantly busy . I have been thinking about the great pleasure that a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can give . ” Miss Bingley asked at once whose eyes he meant . He answered , “ Miss Elizabeth Bennet’s , ” and she was shocked . For the rest of the evening she teased him about his future mother - in - law , and as he listened quite calmly , she went on and on . Not long after this Jane was asked to dine with Miss Bingley and her sister while the men were out . “ Can I have the carriage ? ” asked Jane .
