Elizabeth read the letter with pain . She was sure that Mr Bingley still loved Jane . But she felt that he was too easily led by his friends , and she began to think less of him . At the same time Mr Wickham stopped paying court to Elizabeth . He turned to a Miss King , a young lady who had just come into a fortune of ten thousand pounds . Elizabeth watched this without much pain . Her heart had been only a little touched , and her pride was content with knowing that she would have been his first choice , if fortune had allowed it . In March she went on a visit to Kent . She had promised Charlotte that she would come , and she went with Sir William Lucas and his younger daughter , Maria , a good - humoured girl with as empty a head as her father . They spent a night in London with the Gardiners on the way . Jane looked well , though her sister could see that she was often sad . Before they left , Mrs Gardiner invited her niece to join them on a tour in the summer , and the answer was a happy yes . The parsonage at Hunsford was small but neat . Mr Collins welcomed them at the gate and showed them every room , every cupboard and every view from every window . He clearly wanted Elizabeth to feel what she had lost by refusing him . But she cared more about her friend , who looked happy and well . When Mr Collins said something foolish , which was not seldom , his wife did not seem to hear it . She had chosen a room at the back of the house for herself , and her guest soon saw why . Her husband sat in his own room at the front , where he could watch the road . On their second day Maria came running upstairs , quite out of breath . “ Oh , my dear Eliza ! Come down at once ! There is such a sight to be seen ! ” She ran down , and through the window she saw two ladies in a low carriage stopping at the garden gate . One was an older lady who lived with the family at Rosings . The other was Miss de Bourgh herself , a thin , pale , small girl , who looked ill and cross . “ She looks sickly , ” thought Elizabeth with secret pleasure . “ She will make Mr Darcy a very proper wife . ” The ladies had come to invite the whole party to dine at Rosings the next day . Mr Collins could hardly believe their good luck . VII . Dinner at Rosings Rosings was a very large , fine house , and Mr Collins counted its windows aloud as they walked across the park . Inside , he told them how much the glass had cost . Sir William and Maria were quite afraid by the time they reached the great room where Lady Catherine sat . Elizabeth was not . She had heard nothing of the lady that made her seem great in mind or in goodness , and she did not think that money and rank alone were anything to fear .
