“ You have said quite enough , madam . I fully see your feelings , and now I have only to be ashamed of what my own have been . Forgive me for having taken up so much of your time , and accept my best wishes for your health and happiness . ” With these words he quickly left the room . A moment later she heard him open the front door and leave the house . Her mind was now in a terrible state , and from real weakness she sat down and cried for half an hour . Mr Darcy had been in love with her for so many months that he wished to marry her in spite of all his objections ! It was almost too strange to believe . But his terrible pride , the cold way he had spoken of Jane , and his cruelty to Mr Wickham soon overcame the pity she had felt for a moment . When she heard the carriage bringing the others home , she hurried away to her own room . IX . The Letter Elizabeth woke the next morning to the same thoughts that had kept her awake . She could not yet get over her surprise , so she went out for a walk before her morning meal . She was walking along the edge of the park when she saw a gentleman coming towards her . It was Mr Darcy . He held out a letter , which she took without thinking . “ I have been walking here for some time in the hope of meeting you , ” he said with a proud calm . “ Will you do me the honour of reading that letter ? ” Then , with a slight bow , he turned and was soon out of sight . She opened the letter . It was long , and it was written in a very close hand . He began by saying that he would not repeat his offer or the feelings that she had found so hateful . He wrote only because she had accused him of two serious wrongs , and he wished to answer them . The first was about Jane . Mr Darcy wrote that he had soon seen that Bingley loved her more than any woman before . He had watched Jane closely at the Netherfield ball . Her looks and manners were open , cheerful and pleasing , as always , but he had seen no sign of deep feeling . He had honestly believed that she did not love his friend . He had not wished to see Bingley marry without love on both sides . There were other reasons too . “ The position of your mother’s family , though bad , was nothing compared with the lack of good manners so often shown by her , by your three younger sisters , and sometimes even by your father . Forgive me . It pains me to offend you . ” He and Bingley’s sisters had followed Bingley to London and had told him that Jane did not care for him . Darcy admitted , too , that he had hidden from Bingley the fact that Jane was in town . “ I did it for the best , ” he wrote . “ On this subject I have nothing more to say and no other apology to offer . ”
