XIV . Nobody Came After two years I remember the rest of that day , and that night and the next day , only as an endless line of police and photographers and newspaper men who went in and out of Gatsby’s front door . The papers said that Wilson had been a man made mad by grief . Myrtle’s sister Catherine swore that Myrtle had never even seen Gatsby , and so the case remained in its simplest form . I found myself on Gatsby’s side , and alone . As he lay in his house and didn’t move or breathe or speak , hour after hour , I felt that I was responsible for him , because nobody else was interested . Half an hour after we found him , I called Daisy , but she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon and taken their luggage with them , and they had left no address . I wanted to get somebody for him . I wanted to go into the room where he lay and tell him , “ I’ll get somebody for you , Gatsby . Don’t worry . Just trust me and I’ll get somebody for you . ” The next morning I sent the butler to New York with a letter to Meyer Wolfshiem . I was sure that he would come out on the next train , just as I was sure that there would be a telegram from Daisy before noon . But neither a telegram nor Mr Wolfshiem arrived . Wolfshiem wrote back that it was a terrible shock , but that he could not come now , because he was tied up in some very important business . On the third day a telegram arrived from a town in Minnesota , and soon afterwards Gatsby’s father came : a serious old man , very helpless and upset , in a long cheap coat on that warm September day . “ I saw it in the Chicago newspaper , ” he said . “ I started right away . Where have they got Jimmy ? ” I took him into the room where his son lay , and left him there . When he came out , his eyes were full of tears , but as he looked at the high hall and the great rooms , his grief began to mix with a sort of proud wonder . “ Jimmy always liked it better down East , ” he said . “ He had a big future before him , you know . If he’d lived , he’d have been a great man . He’d have helped build up the country . ” That night Klipspringer called . I hoped that he would come to the funeral , but he said that he was staying with some people in Greenwich who expected him at a picnic . What he had really called about was a pair of tennis shoes that he had left at the house , and he wanted the butler to send them on . I put the phone down before he had finished .
