“ Fine fellow , isn’t he ? ” said Mr Wolfshiem . “ Handsome to look at and a perfect gentleman . He’s an Oggsford man . ” He paused . “ I see you’re looking at my cuff buttons . ” I hadn’t been looking at them , but I did now . They were made of strangely familiar pieces of ivory . “ Finest examples of human teeth , ” he told me . When Gatsby came back , Mr Wolfshiem finished his coffee and left us . “ Who is he , anyhow ? ” I asked . “ An actor ? ” “ No . Meyer Wolfshiem is a gambler . ” Gatsby hesitated , and then he added coolly , “ He’s the man who fixed the World Series back in 1919 . ” I remembered , of course , that the great baseball games of 1919 had been sold to gamblers . But I had never thought that one man could play with the faith of fifty million people , like a thief who opens a safe . “ Why isn’t he in jail ? ” I asked . “ They can’t get him , old sport . He’s a smart man . ” As I was paying the bill , I saw Tom Buchanan across the crowded room , and I took Gatsby over to say hello . “ Where’ve you been ? ” Tom asked me eagerly . “ Daisy’s furious because you haven’t called . ” “ This is Mr Gatsby , Mr Buchanan . ” They shook hands briefly , and a strange , embarrassed look came over Gatsby’s face . I turned to say something to him , but he was no longer there . VII . Jordan’s Story That afternoon Jordan Baker sat very straight on a chair in the tea garden of the Plaza Hotel and told me this story . “ One October day in 1917 , ” she said , “ I was walking along a street in Louisville . I was sixteen then , and Daisy Fay was eighteen . She was by far the most popular of all the young girls in town . She dressed in white , and she had a little white car . All day long the telephone rang in her house , and excited young officers from the army camp asked for the honour of taking her out that night . “ That morning she was sitting in her white car with a lieutenant I had never seen before , and she asked me to tell the Red Cross that she couldn’t come to make bandages that day . While she was speaking , the officer looked at her in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at some time . His name was Jay Gatsby . I didn’t see him again for over four years , and even after I had met him on Long Island , I didn’t realise that it was the same man . “ That winter there were wild stories about Daisy . People said that her mother had found her packing her bag one night , because she wanted to go to New York and say goodbye to a soldier who was going overseas . Her family stopped her , and for several weeks she didn’t speak to them . After that she didn’t go out with soldiers any more .
