The smallness of the request shook me . He had waited five years and bought a mansion , where he gave starlight to passing moths , so that he could “ come over ” some afternoon to a stranger’s garden . “ Did I have to know all this before he could ask such a little thing ? ” “ He’s afraid , because he’s waited so long . I think he half expected her to wander into one of his parties some night , but she never did . Then he began asking people if they knew her , and I was the first one he found . That was the night he sent for me at his party . ” “ Does Daisy want to see Gatsby ? ” “ She’s not to know about it . Gatsby doesn’t want her to know . You’re just supposed to invite her to tea . ” It was dark now . As we passed under a little bridge , I put my arm around Jordan’s golden shoulder , drew her towards me and asked her to dinner . Suddenly I wasn’t thinking of Daisy and Gatsby any more , but of this clean , hard , limited person who leaned back lightly within the circle of my arm . Unlike Gatsby and Tom , I had no girl whose face floated along the dark roofs and bright signs of the city . So I drew the girl beside me closer . Her pale , scornful mouth smiled , and I drew her up again , this time to my face . VIII . Tea in the Rain When I came home to West Egg that night at two o’clock , Gatsby’s house was lit from the tower to the cellar , although there was no party and no sound . Gatsby was walking towards me across his lawn . “ I talked with Miss Baker , ” I said . “ I’m going to call up Daisy tomorrow and invite her over here to tea . ” “ Oh , that’s all right , ” he said carelessly . “ I don’t want to put you to any trouble . ” He thought for a moment . “ I want to get the grass cut . ” We both looked down at the grass . There was a sharp line where my rough lawn ended and his smooth lawn began , and I suspected that he meant my grass . Then he offered me a little secret business on the side , which would bring me a nice bit of money . He clearly wanted to pay me for a service , so I said no at once . The next day I called Daisy from the office and invited her to tea . “ Don’t bring Tom , ” I warned her . “ Who is Tom ? ” she asked innocently . The day we had agreed on was pouring with rain . In the morning a man came and cut my grass , and at two o’clock a whole greenhouse of flowers arrived from Gatsby’s . An hour later Gatsby himself hurried in , in a white flannel suit , a silver shirt and a gold - coloured tie . He was pale , and there were dark rings under his eyes , because he had not slept . He sat and stared out of the wet windows , as if a series of invisible but alarming events were taking place outside . At last he got up and told me in an uncertain voice that he was going home .
