As I watched , he took her hand . She said something low in his ear , and he turned towards her with a rush of feeling . I think that voice held him most , with its changing , feverish warmth , because nobody could dream it too much . That voice was a song that would never die . They had forgotten me . I looked at them once more , and then I went out of the room and down the marble steps into the rain , leaving them there together . IX . The Boy from North Dakota All summer Gatsby’s fame had grown , spread by the hundreds of people who had enjoyed his parties . One story said that he had a secret pipe that brought whisky from Canada , and another said that he lived in a boat that looked like a house . Why these stories pleased James Gatz of North Dakota is not easy to say . James Gatz was his real name . He had changed it at the age of seventeen , on the day when his career began , when he saw Dan Cody’s yacht drop its anchor on Lake Superior . His parents were poor farmers who had never done well , and in his imagination he had never really accepted them as his parents at all . The truth was that Jay Gatsby of West Egg sprang from his own idea of himself . He invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a boy of seventeen would be likely to invent , and he was faithful to this idea to the end . For over a year he had been working along the shore of Lake Superior , where he dug for clams and caught fish for food and a bed . At night wild and beautiful pictures filled his head . Cody was fifty years old then , and he had made his millions in the mines of the West . Young Gatz borrowed a rowing boat , rowed out to the yacht and warned Cody that a wind might catch him and break his boat up in half an hour . To the boy , that yacht stood for all the beauty and glamour in the world . Cody found that the boy was quick and wildly ambitious , so he bought him a blue coat , six pairs of white trousers and a sailor’s cap , and when the yacht left for the West Indies , Gatsby left too . He stayed with Cody for five years and did every job on the boat , and he even guarded Cody , who did foolish things when he was drunk . Because of Cody , Gatsby himself drank very little . When Cody died , he left Gatsby twenty - five thousand dollars , but Gatsby never got the money , because a woman who had come on board in Boston took it all . He was left with his strange education , and the shape of Jay Gatsby had filled out into a real man .
