“ You knew that he was waiting for me , ” he said . “ Why did you not warn me ? You are a priest ! ” “ I saw that God’s justice was in his hands , ” the Count answered . “ There is no God , ” the old man said bitterly . “ If there were a God , many wicked men would be punished who now live in peace . ” “ Patience , ” said the Count . “ Look at me . ” He took off the priest’s wig and robe , and the old man saw another face , a strong pale face with black hair and burning eyes . “ Lord Wilmore ! ” he said . “ No , I know you . I knew you long ago . ” The Count bent down and spoke a name very softly into his ear : “ Edmond Dantès . ” The dying man raised his hands towards heaven . “ My God , ” he said , “ forgive me . You are real , and you are the father of men in heaven and their judge on earth . ” Then he fell back on the pillow , and he was dead . “ One , ” said the Count quietly . XII . News from Yanina One afternoon Albert visited the Count’s house , and the Count introduced him to Haydée . She was sitting on her silk cushions , and she spoke to Albert in Italian , because she did not speak much French . Before she began , the Count said a few quick words to her in Greek , which Albert did not understand . Then she told him about her childhood , about a lake , a castle and a great old man with a white beard who had been her father . She remembered the day when the Turkish army came and her father’s soldiers waited for news from a French officer whom he trusted . She remembered the fire , the shots and her mother’s tears . Albert listened , fascinated , and he did not notice how carefully the Count was watching his face . “ And do you remember the name of the French officer ? ” Albert asked . The Count made a sign to him to be silent , and Haydée went on with her story without saying the name . In Greek the Count had told her to speak about her father’s fate , but not about the traitor . Albert forgot that moment very quickly , but later he would remember it . Fernand’s turn came next . One morning a small Paris newspaper printed a short report from the town of Yanina , in Greece . It said that years earlier the castle of the great Ali Pasha , the ruler of Yanina , had been given up to the Turkish army by a French officer called Fernand . This officer had been the pasha’s trusted friend , and he had betrayed his master for money . Ali Pasha had been killed , and his wife and young daughter had been sold as slaves . Albert de Morcerf was furious when he read it , because everyone in Paris knew that his father had served Ali Pasha in Greece . He went at once to his friend Beauchamp , the journalist , and asked him to find out the truth . Beauchamp travelled to Yanina himself , and three weeks later he came back with a very serious face .
