XVI . Wait and Hope They travelled south to Marseilles . When they reached the harbour , the Count stopped and looked for a long time at the old port , the ships and the white houses in the sun . “ Twenty - three years ago , on the night of my wedding feast , they rowed me out of this harbour to the Château d’If , ” he said quietly . Morrel did not answer . He was thinking only of Valentine . While he visited his father’s grave , the Count walked to the little house in the Allées de Meilhan where old Dantès had lived . Mercédès was sitting under the fig tree in the garden , and she was crying . Albert had already sailed for Africa as a common soldier . “ Edmond , ” she said , when she saw him . “ I have nothing left now except my prayers . I shall pray for you , and for my son , and for the man I was once going to marry . ” “ I wanted to be the hand of God , ” he said sadly . “ I punished the guilty , but innocent people have suffered too . ” “ You only punished those who deserved it , ” she answered . “ I was the one who failed you . I did not wait long enough . Goodbye , Edmond . ” They shook hands like old friends , and he left her in the garden . He knew that he would never see her again . The next day the Count took a boat to the Château d’If . The prison was empty now , and a guide showed visitors around it for a few coins . The guide took him down into the cell where Number 34 had lived , and then into the cell of the mad priest , with the tunnel that the two prisoners had dug . “ Some years ago , they say , one of the prisoners escaped , ” the guide said . “ He took the place of his dead friend in the sack , and they threw him into the sea . ” In his old cell the Count found the words that he had once scratched on the wall in his darkest days : “ O God , preserve my memory ! ” Then , while he was kneeling by the bed where Faria had died , the guide brought him a roll of cloth which he had found under the floor . It was the old priest’s great book , written on strips of his shirts with fish - bone pens . On the first page there was a line from the Bible , which promised that the servant of God would walk on lions and dragons without fear . The Count took it as an answer from his friend , and he paid the guide ten thousand francs for the book . Danglars , meanwhile , had reached Rome and collected his money at Thomson and French . As he was leaving the city in his carriage , bandits stopped him on the road and took him to a cave under the ground . Their chief was Luigi Vampa . They did not hurt him or take his money . They simply gave him no food .
