That night Dantès was led out of the building and put into a boat with four soldiers , who rowed out of the harbour into the dark sea . “ Where are you taking me ? ” he asked . Nobody answered . Then he saw a black rock in front of them , and on the rock stood an old , grim fortress . It was the Château d’If , the state prison , where the most dangerous enemies of the king were kept . “ No ! ” Dantès cried . “ Monsieur de Villefort promised me ! I have done nothing wrong ! ” He tried to jump into the sea , but the soldiers held him down . They took him up the stone steps and through heavy doors , and they locked him in a cold , damp cell , where he spent the whole night standing in the darkness , unable to believe what had happened to him . Meanwhile Villefort travelled to Paris as fast as horses could carry him . He went to the king and warned him that Napoleon was about to leave Elba . A few days later Napoleon landed in France , and for a hundred days he was emperor again . During those days Villefort was afraid , but his father Noirtier protected him , and when the king came back to power , Villefort was rewarded for his loyal warning and given a higher post . Mercédès went to Villefort to ask about Edmond , and so did Monsieur Morrel , who wrote letters and visited the deputy many times . But Villefort only shook his head . In fact , while Napoleon was in power , he had told Morrel to write a request which said that Dantès had served the emperor loyally . When the king returned , that paper made Dantès look even more dangerous , and Villefort kept it safely in his office with the other papers about the young sailor . Nobody came to set Dantès free . Old Dantès waited for his son at the window every day , and Mercédès went to the harbour every evening and looked out at the sea . Danglars , who had never become captain after all , left Morrel’s service and went to work for a banker in Spain . III . Number 34 Days passed , then weeks , then months . At first Dantès asked every visitor to his cell for a trial , because he wanted to see a judge and explain his story . When the inspector of prisons visited the Château d’If , the young man spoke to him with such honesty that the inspector promised to look at his papers . But in the papers he found only the words that Villefort had written there , which said that Dantès was a violent friend of Napoleon who must be watched with the greatest care . After that , nobody came . The prisoner no longer had a name . In the books of the prison he was simply Number 34 . The inspector had also visited another prisoner , Number 27 , who was an old Italian priest , the Abbé Faria . The guards believed that he was mad , because every time he saw an official , he offered him an enormous treasure in exchange for his freedom . The inspector only laughed at him .
