IV . The Abbé’s Treasure Faria decided to teach Dantès everything he knew , and he taught him history , mathematics , science and several foreign languages . Dantès had an excellent memory and learned very quickly . In a few years he could speak English , Italian , Spanish and German , and he could talk about almost any subject like a well - educated gentleman . He also learned to be patient , to listen more than he spoke , and to hide his feelings behind a calm face . One day Dantès told his friend the whole story of his arrest . Faria listened in silence , and then he began to ask questions . “ Who would gain if you disappeared ? ” he asked . “ Who wanted to become captain in your place ? ” “ Danglars , I suppose . But he was always a good friend to me . ” “ And who wanted to marry Mercédès ? ” “ Her cousin Fernand . ” “ Was Danglars with Fernand on the day before your arrest ? ” Dantès thought for a moment , and then he remembered the inn , the bottle of wine , the pen and the paper . “ Yes , ” he said slowly . “ They were together , with Caderousse . ” “ Then Danglars wrote the letter , probably with his left hand so that nobody would know his writing , and Fernand posted it . Now tell me about the man who questioned you . What did he do with the letter that you were carrying ? ” “ He burned it . He seemed very frightened when he read the name on it . ” “ What was the name ? ” “ Noirtier . ” Faria laughed bitterly . “ My poor friend , do you know the real name of Villefort’s father ? It is Noirtier . Villefort burned the only proof against you because it was also the only proof against his father , and that is why you are here . ” Dantès jumped up from the bed . For a long time he walked up and down the cell without a word , and when he spoke again , his voice was hard and cold . “ I am sorry that you asked me , ” Faria said . “ I have put a new feeling into your heart : the wish for revenge . ” Soon the two friends began to plan a new escape . Faria drew a map of the fortress on the floor of his cell , and they decided to dig a passage under the gallery where a guard walked up and down every night . They worked on it in secret for fifteen months , and at last the passage was almost finished . They had even made a rope ladder strong enough to carry a man down to the rocks below . Then one night Faria fell suddenly on the floor of his cell , his body shaking and his face grey . He had told Dantès that he suffered from attacks of this kind , and he had shown him a small bottle of red medicine . Dantès poured some drops between the old man’s lips , and slowly Faria opened his eyes again . But after the second attack his right arm and his left leg were paralysed , and he could no longer walk . Now the old man could not climb down a rope or swim through the cold sea . “ Go without me , ” Faria said . “ You are young and strong . Escape alone . ” “ I shall stay with you as long as you live , ” Dantès answered . Faria looked at him for a long time . Then he took a piece of old paper from its hiding place . Half of it had been burnt , and the writing was hard to read .
