“ This is my treasure , ” he said . “ Everyone thinks that I am mad because of it . But listen to me . ” He told Dantès a story from three hundred years earlier . A rich cardinal called Spada had been invited to dinner by a wicked Pope and his son , who wanted his money , and he had been poisoned . But before his death the cardinal had hidden all his gold and jewels in a secret place , and nobody had ever found them . Faria had worked for the last member of the Spada family , and one day , by pure chance , he had found the cardinal’s old letter inside a prayer book . He had completed the burnt half from his knowledge of the story . The letter said that the treasure was hidden in a cave on the small island of Monte Cristo , not far from the island of Elba . To find it , one had to lift the twentieth rock in a straight line from the little bay on the east side . “ It is worth two million Roman crowns , ” Faria said . “ If we escape , half is yours . If I die here , it is all yours . ” A few months later the third attack came . Dantès gave him all the medicine that was left , but this time it was too late , and in the morning , when he crept through the tunnel , he found his friend cold and dead on his bed . Dantès sat in the dark for a long time . He was alone again , and he thought about death once more . Then he thought about Danglars , Fernand and Villefort , who were living free and happy while he suffered . “ No , ” he said aloud . “ I want to live . I want to find them . ” V . The Island of Monte Cristo In the afternoon two guards came into Faria’s cell with a long sack of rough cloth , and Dantès listened through the wall as they sewed the old man’s body inside it . They were talking about the funeral , and he heard every word . “ They will take him out tonight , after ten o’clock , ” said one . “ Where do they bury prisoners here ? ” asked the other , who was new . “ You will see , ” the first one answered with a laugh . When the guards had gone , Dantès had a wild idea , and he did not stop to think about it twice . He crept through the tunnel , opened the sack with Faria’s knife , and carried his friend’s body back to his own bed . He laid it with its face to the wall and covered it with his blanket , so that the guard who brought his supper would think that Number 34 was asleep . Then he returned to the other cell , climbed into the sack himself with the knife in his hand , and sewed it up again from the inside as well as he could . His heart was beating so hard that he was afraid the guards would hear it . If they discovered the trick , he would simply say that he wanted to die . But if they buried him in the earth , he planned to dig his way out before he ran out of air .
