He went to the little bay on the east side of the island and began to count the rocks . Behind the twentieth one he found a large flat stone with an iron ring in it . With a pickaxe and some gunpowder that he had taken from the boat , he lifted the stone , and under it there were steps that led down into a cave . From the first cave he broke into a second one , and in the furthest corner he dug until his pickaxe hit something hard . It was a wooden chest with iron bands . His hands were shaking as he opened it . The chest was divided into three parts . In the first there were shining gold coins . In the second there were bars of gold . In the third there were diamonds , pearls and rubies , which fell through his fingers like drops of coloured fire . Dantès fell on his knees and thanked God . Then he thought of the old priest who had given him this fortune , and he cried for the first time since his friend had died . VI . The Abbé Busoni When the smugglers returned , Dantès went with them to the Italian port of Leghorn , where he sold four small diamonds . Then he said goodbye to them and gave Jacopo enough money to buy a boat of his own . Later he went back to the island alone , filled his pockets with jewels , and bought a fast yacht with a crew who would obey him without asking questions . His first visit was to Marseilles . Nobody there recognised the rich stranger , and he soon learned that his father had died years earlier . Mercédès was no longer in the village of the Catalans , and nobody knew where she had gone . He needed someone who could tell him the whole story . A few weeks later , on a hot day in June , a priest in a black robe rode up to a poor little inn near the old Roman bridge called the Pont du Gard . The innkeeper , a thin man whose business was failing , came to the door . It was Caderousse . “ I am the Abbé Busoni , ” the priest said in an Italian accent . “ Did you once know a young sailor called Edmond Dantès ? ” “ Did I know him ? ” Caderousse cried . “ He was my friend ! What has happened to him ? ” “ He died in prison , ” the priest said calmly . “ I was with him at the end . Before he died , he gave me a diamond which he had received from a rich Englishman in the prison , and he asked me to sell it . The money was to be shared among the people who had loved him : his father , Mercédès , and his good friends Danglars and Fernand . And you too , Caderousse , because you were also his friend . ” He showed Caderousse a beautiful diamond which was worth fifty thousand francs . The innkeeper’s eyes shone with greed . “ His father is dead , ” Caderousse said slowly . “ And Danglars and Fernand were not his friends . They were the cause of all his misfortune . ”
